Malachite does not do subtle. The banding runs in concentric rings of green on green, no two bowls alike, and against a gold rim the effect is closer to jewellery than homeware. This one is eight inches across and two deep — generous enough to be useful, handsome enough that it never looks like storage.

It comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the source of the world's finest malachite. Carving a bowl this size from banded stone means working with the pattern rather than against it, which is why the rings land where they do.

How to use it

Use it as a landing place: rings at the end of the day, tumbled stones between grids, a folded intention slip, incense ash before it goes outside.

On an altar it makes a good offering dish — dry offerings only, since standing water is not kind to malachite.
