Smudge sticks and sage: what they are and how to choose

A smudge stick is a bundle of dried aromatic plant material, wrapped tight and bound with cotton string so it smoulders slowly instead of burning up. Light the tip, let it catch, blow the flame out, and what is left is a steady ember and a thick ribbon of fragrant smoke. Burning aromatic plants this way is one of the oldest ritual practices there is — frankincense in Egyptian temples, cedar and sweetgrass across North America, juniper in the Himalaya, mugwort in European folk custom. What is actually in the bundle

Most of what is sold as a smudge stick is white sage (Salvia apiana), a resinous Californian shrub with broad silver leaves that holds an ember better than almost anything else. From there the bundles divide into three groups. Plain herb bundles are one plant only: white sage, cedar, juniper, lavender, mugwort, rosemary, eucalyptus or yerba santa. Blends pair sage with a second herb for a different scent and intention — cinnamon and orange for abundance, mugwort for dream work, rose for love work, dragon’s blood resin for shadow work. Floral bundles add dried flower heads to the outside; they look striking and burn a little faster, since petals are lighter than leaf.

How to judge quality

Pick the bundle up. A good one is dense and heavy for its size, wound tightly enough that the string bites slightly into the leaf, and dry all the way through — a loose bundle burns out in minutes and a damp one will not hold an ember at all. The leaves should be silver-grey and intact rather than crumbling to dust in the wrap, and the scent should be obvious before you ever light it. Stem-heavy bundles are cheaper for a reason: you are paying for wood that does not smoke well. Four inches is the standard size and the sensible one for a room or two.

Burning one safely

Open a window first — the smoke needs somewhere to go, and moving air is half of what the practice is for. Light the tip, let it flame for ten or twenty seconds, then blow it out and work with the ember. Hold a fireproof dish, a bowl or a shell underneath to catch falling ash, and never leave a lit bundle unattended or in reach of a pet or a child. To put it out, press the ember into sand, ash or dry earth, or smother it against the bottom of a dish; water will ruin the rest of the bundle.
