Collection: Mushroom Extract Powders
Seven water-extracted mushroom powders from Ora Cacao — lion's mane, reishi, chaga, cordyceps and turkey tail as single species, plus two four-species blends. Fruiting body only, grown outdoors, no grain or starch filler, and every pouch prints its beta-glucan figure.
In short: Beta glucans per serving is the number that matters. Two grams, stirred into anything hot.

How to choose a mushroom extract powder
What separates a good mushroom powder from a poor one is invisible in the finished pouch, and two questions settle it. The first is which part of the fungus you are buying. A great deal of what sells as mushroom powder is mycelium grown on sterilized grain, then milled with the grain still in it — so a large share of the weight is starch. Everything here comes from the fruiting body, grown outdoors in hoop houses on the substrate each species prefers, with no grain, starch or filler. The second is whether it has been extracted at all. Raw ground mushroom is largely indigestible chitin; water extraction at a 1:1 ratio is what makes the compounds available, and why these dissolve into a cup instead of sitting on top of it.
The number to compare: beta glucans per serving
Beta glucans are the polysaccharides most often measured in mushroom research, and the per-serving figure is the closest thing this category has to an honest spec sheet. Most brands do not print it, which tells you something. All seven of these do, on an identical 2 g serving with 31 servings per 2.2 oz (63 g) pouch, so the numbers are directly comparable.
| Powder | Species | Beta glucans per 2 g | Often taken |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey Tail | Single | 900 mg | Any time — vanishes into broth or coffee |
| Reishi | Single | 700 mg | Evening |
| Lion's Mane | Single | 600 mg | Morning |
| ProSporous | Blend of four | 600 mg | Instead of three separate pouches |
| ImmuniBoost | Blend of four | 516 mg | Daily, through the cold months |
| Cordyceps | Single | 500 mg | Daytime |
| Chaga | Single | 160 mg | Daily — the lowest figure here |
One honesty note, since we would rather you heard it from us: the maker's own product copy describes reishi at 700 mg as the most concentrated single species in the range, while turkey tail is listed at 900 mg. Both figures are printed as supplied. We have not reconciled them, and we are not going to quietly drop one to make the page tidier.
Single species or a blend
A single species is the better first purchase: you learn what one mushroom is like in your cup, and if it does not suit you, you have not paid for three others. Blends earn their place once you know you want several. ProSporous carries lion's mane, cordyceps, poria and tremella in one scoop — poria is the unusual inclusion, rarely stocked in the West despite a long standing in traditional Chinese practice.
Cost, and how to actually use it
A single pouch works out at roughly ninety-three cents a serving; the four-pack brings it to about seventy-eight. Stir 2 g into anything hot and already flavored, once the liquid is off the boil — cacao carries the earthiness best, but coffee, chai and savory broth all work. No brewing, no whisk. Keep the pouch beside whatever you already drink every morning; an extract you have to go looking for is one you stop using by week three.
These are food, valued here for warmth, taste and the few minutes that making them takes. Mushrooms have a long traditional record in East Asian and Siberian practice, and that record is a matter of tradition and personal experience rather than established science. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescribed medication or living with a medical condition, speak to your doctor before adding any mushroom extract.
Frequently asked questions
What does “fruiting body, water extracted” mean, and why does it matter?
The fruiting body is the mushroom you would recognize if you found it on a log. A lot of powder sold in this category is not that: it is mycelium, the root-like network, grown on sterilized grain and then milled with the grain still in it, so a large part of what you buy by weight is starch. Every powder here comes from the fruiting body only. Water extraction at a 1:1 ratio is the second half of it — raw ground mushroom is mostly chitin, which the body struggles to break down, and extraction is what makes the compounds available and what lets the powder dissolve cleanly into a cup rather than floating on the surface.
What are beta glucans, and how many should I look for?
Beta glucans are the polysaccharides most commonly measured in mushroom research, and the per-serving figure is the nearest thing this category has to a comparable specification. There is no official target to hit, so the useful move is not chasing a number but comparing like with like: every pouch here uses the same 2 g serving, so 900 mg of turkey tail against 160 mg of chaga is a real difference rather than a packaging trick. Far more telling than any single figure is whether a brand prints one at all. Most do not.
Should I start with a single species or a blend?
Start with one species. You find out what a single mushroom is actually like in your cup, and if it does not suit you, you have not paid for three more you will not finish. Lion's mane in the morning and reishi in the evening are the two most common places people begin. Blends make sense later, once you already know you want several species and would otherwise be buying three pouches: ProSporous combines lion's mane, cordyceps, poria and tremella, and ImmuniBoost combines turkey tail, reishi, phellinus and chaga.
What does a serving actually cost?
Each pouch holds 2.2 oz, which is 63 g, and a serving is 2 g — so 31 servings per pouch. At $28.95 that is roughly ninety-three cents a serving. The four-pack at $96.95 gives 124 servings, or about seventy-eight cents. Every powder in this collection is priced identically, single species and blends alike, so the choice between them is about what is in the pouch rather than what it costs.
How do I take it, and does it need to be brewed?
No brewing. Stir a 2 g serving into any hot liquid that already has some flavor of its own and let it dissolve — ceremonial cacao is the natural partner because the cacao carries the earthiness completely, but coffee, chai and savory broth work just as well. Add it after the liquid has come off the boil rather than into a rolling boil. The one habit worth building is keeping the pouch beside whatever you already drink first thing, because the usual reason people abandon an extract is simply that it lives in the wrong cupboard.
Is there anyone who should not take these?
These are food rather than medicine, and no health claim is made for them here. That said, mushroom extracts are not automatically suitable for everyone: if you are pregnant or nursing, taking prescribed medication — blood thinners and immune-modulating drugs are the ones most often raised — or living with a diagnosed condition, ask your doctor before adding one. The same goes if you have any history of reacting to fungi. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and nothing here is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
