Soy candles, and what the wax actually changes
Soy wax is pressed and hydrogenated from soybean oil. It matters for one measurable reason: it melts at a lower temperature than paraffin. That is why the jars on this page are rated for fifty to sixty hours, noticeably longer than a paraffin candle of similar size, and why the wax can carry essential-oil scent without leaning on synthetic fragrance. Everything else people say about soy follows from that one property.
How to tell a good soy candle from a soy-ish one
Read the wax line, not the front label. “Soy blend” on a shelf usually means soy plus paraffin in an undisclosed ratio. Every candle on this page states its wax plainly: certified organic soy, or an American-sourced soy and coconut blend with zero paraffin.
Look at the wick. Cotton or hemp, ideally coated in beeswax, and never a zinc-cored wick. The Clean Crystal Candles state theirs: organic beeswax-coated hemp. Where a label says nothing about the wick, ask the maker.
Ask where the scent comes from. Essential oils and “fragrance” are not the same declaration. The scented candles here name essential oils; the unscented ones name nothing, because there is nothing.
Do not read frosting as a defect. The pale crystalline bloom that appears on natural soy is a sign of unblended wax. A glassy, perfectly even surface is often the tell that something else was added.
Choosing between the two halves of this page
There are ten soy candles in the shop and they split cleanly into two groups separated by four dollars. Six are from Timeless Organics in New Jersey at $24.95 — hand-poured in small batches, scented with natural essential oils, in recyclable amber glass with peel-off paper labels, roughly fifty hours. They are chosen by scent: vanilla for warmth, sea salt and lime-basil-mandarin for a room that should feel aired out rather than perfumed, white moss and cotton for reading, mango and coconut for the tropical end.
Four are from Shakti SOULutions in Colorado at $28.95 — 7.5 oz, soy and coconut wax, organic hemp wick, up to sixty hours, completely unscented and undyed, each topped with a stone and a clear quartz point and offered in two crystal arrangements. They are chosen by the stone rather than the smell: citrine, peridot, rainbow moonstone or tiger’s eye. These stones are traditionally used for focus and intention-setting during a quiet hour; the candle makes no other claim.
So the real question is not which scent, but whether you want scent at all. If someone in the house reacts to fragrance, or the candle will sit beside incense or an oil burner that already perfumes the room, the unscented four are the better buy.
Getting the full burn out of it
Soy has a memory, and the first burn writes it. Leave the candle lit until the melted pool reaches the edge of the glass — two to three hours — or it will tunnel down the middle for the rest of its life and leave a ring of wax against the glass that you will never recover. After that, trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch before each burn, keep sessions to three or four hours, and never leave a lit candle unattended or near anything that can catch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the scented and unscented soy candles here?
Both makers use soy, but for opposite reasons. The six Timeless Organics candles are scented with 100% natural essential oils and are meant to change how a room smells. The four Shakti SOULutions Clean Crystal Candles are completely unscented and undyed, topped with crystals, and are meant to mark a quiet hour without adding anything to the air. If anyone in the room is sensitive to fragrance, the unscented four are the safe choice.
How long does a soy candle burn?
About 50 hours for the Timeless Organics jars and up to 60 hours for the 7.5 oz Shakti tumblers. Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, so the same amount of wax lasts noticeably longer. Burning in sessions of three to four hours rather than all day also stretches it.
Why does my soy candle look bumpy, frosted or uneven on top?
That is soy behaving normally. Frosting — a pale crystalline bloom on the surface or against the glass — is a sign of unblended natural soy wax, not a fault, and it has no effect on scent or burn. A slightly uneven top after a burn is the same story.
Do I need to do anything special on the first burn?
Yes, and it is the one thing that decides how the whole candle behaves. On the first burn, leave it lit until the melted pool of wax reaches the edge of the glass, usually two to three hours. Soy has a memory: if you blow it out early the first time, it will keep tunnelling down the middle and leave a ring of wax you never get back. Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before each following burn.
Is soy wax better than paraffin?
It burns cooler and longer and is made from a renewable crop rather than a petroleum by-product, and it holds essential-oil scent without needing synthetic fragrance. Paraffin throws scent harder and gives a smoother-looking surface. Every candle on this page is soy or a soy-coconut blend with no paraffin, and each one states its wax openly.
Can I keep the jar?
Both makers designed for it. Timeless Organics uses recyclable amber glass with paper labels that peel off cleanly; Shakti SOULutions pours into a lead-free glass tumbler made in the USA. Wash the last of the wax out with hot soapy water once the wick tab is removed.
