This is the smoothest cup Ora makes, and the reason is physical rather than poetic: cacao from the Kilombero Valley carries more cacao butter than average, so it emulsifies into something closer to silk than to a hot drink. If gritty cacao has put you off before, start here.

Seven hundred certified organic family farms, most of them half an acre to two acres, grow it between rice and banana crops on the edge of Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Their partner, Kokoa Kamili — Swahili for quality cacao — ferments and dries to an exacting standard and has paid the highest cacao prices in the country since its third year.

At a glance

  • Origin – Kilombero Valley, Tanzania — 700 organic smallholder farms
  • Cacao content – 100%, whole bean, naturally high in cacao butter
  • Per serving – 25 discs (23 g) — 150 calories, 0 g sugar, 4 g fiber, 52 mg magnesium
  • Stimulants – About 212 mg theobromine and roughly 30 mg naturally occurring caffeine per cup
  • Certification – USDA Organic, vegan, keto, soy-free, GMO-free, lab tested for heavy metals
  • Sizes – 1/2 lb, 1 lb, 5 lb, and 1 oz single-serve boxes of 12
  • Shipping – Ships within 3 business days

How to use it

Weigh or chop 23 g — about 25 discs — and melt it into 6–8 oz of hot, not boiling, water. Boiling water scorches cacao and turns it bitter.

Whisk it properly. Thirty seconds with a hand frother or a small whisk is the difference between a smooth, emulsified cup and a gritty one. There is no sugar in the bag, so add honey, a pinch of salt or chili if you want — it needs none of them.

Start below the full serving for your first few cups and work upward. Cacao is best met gradually. The 1 oz single-serve boxes travel well and need no scale.

Which pure Ora origin is which

Pure origin Character Reach for it when
Glowing Guatemala Mothering, wise, loving You want insight and inner work
Thriving Tanzania Silky, clarifying, uplifting You want focus and momentum
Boundless Belize Expansive, expressive, magical You want meditation and creativity
Connected Colombia Soothing, earthy, steadying You want to slow down and ground

✨ Temple Tip

This is the one to reach for when you have something to finish rather than something to feel. Make it at the desk, not on the sofa — and skip the honey the first time so you can taste what the extra cacao butter actually does.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from cocoa powder?

Cocoa powder has most of the cacao butter pressed out of it. Ceremonial cacao is the whole bean, minimally processed, with the fat left in — which is why it is prepared as a drink rather than stirred into baking.

Why is this one described as silkier?

The cacao from this region has a higher cacao butter content than average, which is what gives the finished cup its smoother mouthfeel.

Does it contain caffeine?

A small amount — roughly 30 mg per cup. The main stimulant in cacao is theobromine, at about 212 mg per cup, which most people find steadier than coffee.

Is there any sugar in it?

None. The ingredient list is organic cacao beans and nothing else.

How do I store it?

Cool, dark, dry and sealed. Cacao picks up other smells quickly, so keep it away from strong spices.
