Bathroom and vanity: what copes with steam
The bathroom is the one room in the house that fights back. Steam, splashes and a small volume of air are hard on soft minerals, plated metal and solid wood, and they concentrate scent instead of spreading it. This page gathers the pieces whose own product texts name the bathroom or the vanity — and, just as useful, it tells you what our makers say to keep out.
What survives a humid room
Stainless steel, not plating. Three necklaces here hang on stainless steel: the Gold Boho Design Necklaces (eye, sun, moon, stars or moon phases, $17.95), whose chain “does not tarnish in a bathroom”; the Triple Moon Goddess Necklace ($17.95, gold or silver), which “takes water, sweat and wear without turning”; and the Gold Tarot Card Necklace ($17.95, nine cards), described as a chain you can wear “in the shower and the sea”. The maker of the boho pendants still advises taking them off for chlorine pools and hot tubs. Dense stone, or sealed stone. The Tauro tray ($173.95) is hand-carved black marble made for a vanity: it gathers dispensers, cosmetics and rings and does not slide. The Less is More tray ($231.95, 11.8 × 9.8 inches) is travertine — warmer, but porous, and its maker asks for a stone sealer once a year if it lives in a bathroom. On either, keep perfume and acidic cosmetics on a small dish, because alcohol and acids can etch marble. The Oval Jewel Box in carved wood and green serpentine ($161.95) is named for a vanity too; keep it out of the splash zone, since the wood should never be soaked.
What to keep out of the bathroom
Our makers say this on the products themselves. Selenite is gypsum and water-soluble: a humid shelf “will visibly degrade the satin surface” of the peach selenite sphere, and the rough selenite bar simply says “do not put it in a bathroom”. Pyrite contains iron and rusts or dulls in damp air — “keep pyrite out of the bathroom”, says the text for the polished pyrite spheres, eggs and hearts. Obsidian chips like glass on a hard floor; “a tiled bathroom shelf is where obsidian comfort stones go to die” (Black Obsidian Comfort Stone). Solid wood wall art, such as the pine Andre panel, is “not advisable”, because sustained humidity moves the wood. And plated jewelry lasts far longer if you take it off “at the bathroom door”, as the wire-wrapped hexagon necklaces put it.
Scent in a small room
Hard surfaces and little air concentrate fragrance. The Midsummer Night reed diffuser ($9.95, jasmine, musk and vanilla, up to 120 days) comes with the most practical line on this page: in a compact space such as a bathroom, use fewer reeds and flip them less often. The same logic applies to incense. The Sagrada Madre Botanical Incense (from $24.95, six floral blends) notes that thirty minutes of a floral is plenty in a bedroom or bathroom, and half a stick is enough in a small room. In the Sagrada Madre Elements Incense (from $26.95), the maker assigns Water — frankincense and lemongrass — to the bathroom. Burn it in a heat-proof holder with the window cracked, and never leave it unattended.
Soap and oil, and how to make them last
RAW African Black Soap is handmade in Ghana, about 8 oz a bar ($14.95, or three for $39.95). It is softer than a milled bar, so the maker’s advice is to keep it on a draining dish out of standing water, and to cut the bar into two or three pieces, keeping the rest dry and wrapped. The two cold-processed bars at $8.95 each, both 4.8 oz, follow the same rule: the Rose & Lavender Wildflower Bar exfoliates gently with hand-ground flowers, and the White Tea & Ginger Shave Bar replaces canned foam. For after the shower, the Healing Ritual Body Oil (lavender and chamomile, $14.95 or $27.95) goes on damp skin, where its coconut base spreads further, and the Citrine Gemstone Body Oil (patchouli, pineapple and hyacinth, $9.95 or $23.95) is sized for the bathroom shelf in the 3.4 oz bottle and for travel in the 1 oz.

Frequently asked questions
Which crystals should not be kept in a bathroom?
Selenite and pyrite above all, and obsidian. Selenite is gypsum and slowly dissolves in humidity, pyrite contains iron and rusts or dulls in damp air, and obsidian chips like glass on a tiled shelf. Our makers say so on the products themselves. Dense, polished stone such as black marble copes far better.
Can I wear stainless steel jewelry in the shower?
The three stainless steel necklaces on this page, yes: the tarot card necklace is described as a chain for “the shower and the sea”. Take them off for anything abrasive, and, as one maker advises, for chlorine pools and hot tubs. Plated jewelry is different; it lasts much longer if it never meets water.
Will a marble tray stain in a bathroom?
Dense black marble handles a bathroom well. Travertine is porous, so its maker recommends a stone sealer once a year if it lives there. Alcohol and acids, perfume included, can etch either, so stand bottles on a small dish or coaster.
How many reeds should I use in a small bathroom?
Fewer than in a living room. The maker of the Midsummer Night diffuser advises using fewer reeds and flipping them less often in a compact space such as a bathroom, because a small tiled room concentrates scent rather than dispersing it.
Can I burn incense in a bathroom?
In moderation and with air. The botanical blends suggest half a stick in a small room and no more than thirty minutes of a floral in a bedroom or bathroom. Use a heat-proof holder, crack the window, keep it away from towels, and never leave it burning unattended.
How do I keep a bar of soap from going soft?
Let it dry between uses. Keep it on a draining dish out of standing water; with raw black soap, cut the bar into pieces and keep the rest dry and wrapped. The stone trays here are made to gather things, not to drain, so do not leave a wet bar on bare stone.
