Rough selenite is the version that still looks like it came out of the ground. No polish, no shaping — just the fibrous, satin-white crystal habit the mineral grows in naturally, broken to length. At roughly nine inches and seven hundred grams, this is the large size, substantial enough to be the anchor of an altar rather than one object among several.

It comes from Morocco, which supplies most of the selenite in circulation, and the appeal is texture as much as form: the surface catches light along the grain of the fibres, so the bar looks lit from within when it is set anywhere near a lamp or a candle.

At a glance

  • Rough, unpolished selenite — natural fibrous habit
  • ~2.5" x 1" x 9" (22–25 cm)
  • ~700 g
  • From Morocco
  • Sold individually — you receive one piece of similar attributes to those shown
  • Ships within 3 business days

How to use it

Lay it flat as a bar across the back of an altar or a shelf, or stand it on end if the break at the base is flat enough to let it. Selenite is at its best beside a light source rather than under one — a candle or a low lamp set to the side sends light down the length of the fibres.

Keep it dry. This is the one rule that matters with selenite: it is a soft gypsum mineral and water will dull the surface, raise the fibres and eventually break the piece down. Dust it with a dry cloth, and do not put it in a bathroom, on a kitchen windowsill, or anywhere it can be rained on.

✨ Temple Tip

Set it where a candle can sit beside it, not in front of it. Selenite fibres act like a bundle of optical strands: light entering from the end or the side travels along the bar and makes the whole length glow, while light hitting it face-on just bounces off.

Questions we get asked

Is this the exact bar in the photographs?

No — this size is sold individually from a batch. You will receive one bar of similar attributes to those shown, at roughly the stated dimensions and weight.

Can I wash it?

No. Selenite is a soft gypsum mineral — it scratches easily and it does not like water. Dust it with a dry, soft cloth and keep it away from sinks, windowsills that catch rain, and damp bathrooms. Never soak or rinse it.

Rough or polished — which should I choose?

Rough keeps the natural fibrous texture and the satin sheen along the grain. Polished selenite is smoother and more reflective but loses that texture. This listing is the rough version.

Will it flake?

Selenite can shed fine fibres at broken edges, particularly when new. A gentle wipe with a dry cloth settles it. Handle it by the body rather than the ends and it stays intact.

How large is the large size, in practice?

Around 9 inches long — 22 to 25 cm — and about 700 grams. Long enough to read as a bar rather than a stone.

Unpolished, unhurried, and best seen by candlelight.

In short

The Rough Selenite Bar is an unpolished Moroccan selenite log sold by Rare Earth Gallery. It keeps the fibrous, satin-white crystal habit the mineral grows in naturally and is simply broken to length, measuring roughly 2.5 x 1 x 9 inches at about 700 grams. It is commonly laid flat across the back of an altar or shelf, where light travels along the grain of the fibres. The price is $30.95, and one piece is supplied, similar in attributes to those shown. Selenite is a soft, water-soluble mineral, so the bar must be kept dry and never washed or soaked.
