The dream herb, bound into a 4-inch bundle.

A 4-inch mugwort smudge stick — a different proposition from sage. Where sage is the broad reset, mugwort has long been burned for protection, good luck, and vivid dreaming, and is traditionally used to clear a space before work that reaches for messages from the higher self. Smudging with mugwort is a quick way to refresh a room and an aura, in the same lineage as the sage traditions it sits beside.

At a glance

  • 4-inch mugwort bundle
  • Traditionally burned for protection, good luck, and vivid dreams
  • A dream-work herb rather than a general-purpose cleanser
  • Clears a space before intuitive or visionary work
  • Reusable across many sessions when extinguished properly and stored dry

How to use it

  • Light the end with the fewest stems — not the leafy end — let it flame, then blow it out so it smolders.
  • Hold it over a heat-proof dish the whole time. An abalone or lion's paw shell is traditional; any ceramic bowl works.
  • Waft the smoke through the space, using a feather if you have one, or set the bundle down on the dish and let it work.
  • To cleanse stones and jewelry, hold them steadily in the smoke until it flows in a straight stream upward after circling the piece.
  • Extinguish it completely by pressing the lit end into the dish, then store it dry. One bundle lasts many sessions.

✨ Temple Tip — burn it before bed, not at bedtime

Mugwort's reputation is for dreams, which leads people to light it as they get into bed — and then leave a smoldering bundle beside a sleeping person. Burn it an hour before, ventilate, extinguish fully, and let the room settle. The scent lingers long after the smoke is gone, which is the part you actually want.

Questions we get asked

How big is the bundle?
Approximately 4 inches.
What is mugwort traditionally used for?
Protection, good luck, and vivid dreams — it is closely associated with dream work.
How is it different from sage?
Sage is the broad clearing herb. Mugwort is the one people reach for around dreaming and intuitive work.
Which end do I light?
The end with the fewest stems.
Is it safe around pets or asthma?
We would not burn it around birds, asthma, or small children. Smoke is a respiratory irritant.

Care & safety: Never leave a smoldering bundle unattended, and make sure it is completely out before you leave the area. Burn over a heat-proof dish and carry the dish with you. Keep out of reach of children and animals and away from anything flammable. Ventilate during and after — smoke is a respiratory irritant regardless of what is burning, and it is not suitable around asthma, small children, or birds. A ritual tool, not a medical or healthcare product; no health claim is made. We recommend consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication. Light it, waft it, put it out properly — then go to sleep. #TempleOfDesire

In short

The Mugwort Smudge Stick is a 4-inch bound mugwort bundle from the Sacred Crystals collection at Temple of Desire. Where white sage is used as a broad clearing herb, mugwort has traditionally been burned for protection, good luck, and dream work, and to clear a space before intuitive or visionary practice. It is lit at the end with the fewest stems, blown out so it smolders, and held over a heat-proof dish while the smoke moves through the room. One bundle ships for $6.95 and lasts across many sessions when extinguished fully and stored dry. No dish, shell, or feather is included. This is a dream-work herb rather than a general-purpose cleanser.
