Sage and smudging run deep in Native American history: sage and other sacred herbs were planted around crops to keep hungry animals off — they do not taste good — and were used for spiritual cleansing and ceremony. Today white sage is commonly burned before ritual to settle the energy of everyone walking in. Ours is organically grown on a farm in Mexico rather than taken from wild stands, which matters more than it sounds: overharvesting of wild white sage is a real and ongoing problem, and farm-grown sage is what makes stripping native land unnecessary.

How to use it

  • Light the end with the fewest stems — not the leafy end — let it flame, then blow it out so it smolders.
  • Hold it over a heat-proof dish the whole time. An abalone or lion's paw shell is traditional; any ceramic bowl works.
  • Waft the smoke through the space, using a feather if you have one, or set the bundle down on the dish and let it work.
  • To cleanse stones and jewelry, hold them steadily in the smoke until it flows in a straight stream upward after circling the piece.
  • Extinguish it completely by pressing the lit end into the dish, then store it dry. One bundle lasts many sessions.
