The oldest reset there is: a bound bundle, a heatproof dish, and an open window. Nothing about it has needed improving.

A hand-bound smudge stick of white sage (Salvia apiana) with rose, wrapped in chakra-colored thread, from Melanated Gypsy Emporium. Each bundle measures roughly 4.25 to 4.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The sage is sustainably harvested in Southern California — which matters more than it sounds, because illegal stripping of wild stands is a documented and ongoing problem in that region.

At a glance

  • Hand-bound white sage (Salvia apiana) with rose
  • Wrapped in chakra-colored thread
  • Roughly 4.25–4.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide
  • Sustainably harvested in Southern California
  • Reusable across many sessions when extinguished properly and stored dry

How to use it

  • Light the tip, let it flame for a few seconds, then blow it out so it smolders.
  • Hold it over a heat-proof dish the whole time and carry the dish with you.
  • Work corners first, then doorways and windows, then the threshold last. Starting at the corners moves what you are clearing toward an exit.
  • Open a window during and after. Smoke in a sealed room is a respiratory problem regardless of what is burning.
  • Extinguish by pressing the lit end into the dish until it stops smoking, not by leaving it to burn out. Stored dry, it will last many sessions.

Smoke or no smoke

Tool Botanicals Smoke Best for
Protection Spray Angelica, rosemary, clove, sandalwood, frankincense, cedarwood No Warding a room or the space around you
Palo Santo Smudge Spray Pure palo santo essential oil No Calm and clarity in smoke-sensitive spaces
White Sage & Rose Smudge Stick White sage (Salvia apiana) with rose Yes A full clearing where smoke is an option
Rainbow Sage Stick Sage bundle wrapped in chakra colors Yes Chakra-focused clearing and realignment

✨ Temple Tip — buy the dish before you buy the second bundle

Almost every scorched table and dropped ember comes from someone holding a smoldering bundle in one hand and nothing in the other. A cheap ceramic bowl carried underneath it the whole way round the room solves the entire problem, and it makes extinguishing properly easy enough that the bundle actually lasts.

Questions we get asked

How big is the bundle?
Roughly 4.25 to 4.5 inches long and about 1.5 inches wide.
Why does sustainable harvesting matter here?
Because illegal stripping of wild white sage stands is a documented and ongoing problem in Southern California. This sage is sustainably harvested, which is a choice with consequences beyond the product.
Is this a Native American ceremony?
No. Burning a herb for cleansing is practiced in nearly every culture; performing a named ceremony belonging to a nation you have no relationship with is a different matter, and we do not teach or claim one.
Can I use it if someone in the house has asthma?
We would not. Smoke is a respiratory irritant, and this is not suitable around asthma, small children, or birds. A cleansing mist does the same job without smoke.
How do I put it out?
Press the lit end into a heat-proof dish until it stops smoking, rather than leaving it to burn out. Then store it dry.

Care & safety: Never leave smoldering material unattended. Burn over a heat-proof dish, carry the dish with you, and ventilate during and after. Not suitable around asthma, small children, or birds — avian airways are genuinely vulnerable to smoke. Extinguish fully before storing. A ritual tool; no health claim is made. Burning a herb for cleansing is practiced in nearly every culture; performing a named ceremony belonging to a nation you have no relationship with is a different matter, and we do not teach or claim one.

More bundles, kits and braids are in Smudge Sticks & Sage. White sage carries a history worth knowing before you light it — White Sage Smudging, Honestly covers where it comes from and how to use it respectfully. If that history gives you pause, What to Burn Instead of White Sage compares eight alternatives without moralizing.

A bundle, a dish, an open window. That is the whole method. #TempleOfDesire
