A decaf that does not drink like an apology. Powerful and tannic, with a strong body and nutty pecan notes — the sort of cup you would not guess had been decaffeinated if nobody told you.

The leaf is organic, grown at 7,000 feet in Biketti, Tamil Nadu, and decaffeinated by a non-toxic CO2 process that removes about 97% of the caffeine. Sold loose, in a 15-cup or 70-cup bag, for the hours when a full-strength black tea is simply not an option.

At a glance

  • 97% of the caffeine removed by a non-toxic CO2 process — no solvents
  • Two sizes: a 15-cup bag and a 70-cup bag
  • Grown at 7,000 ft in Biketti, Tamil Nadu, India
  • Tasting notes: powerful and tannic, strong body, nutty pecan
  • Ingredients: organic black tea from Biketti, Tamil Nadu, India
  • Also sold as tea bags

How to use it

  • Near-boiling water — around 205°F / 96°C. Decaffeinated leaf still wants full heat.
  • Three to four minutes. This one has the body to take a longer steep than most decafs will bear.
  • More leaf, less time if you want it stronger — the same rule that improves most home brewing.
  • Reinfuse once for a lighter second cup.
  • This is the evening tea. After dinner, when a black tea would otherwise keep you up.

Which bag size

Size Roughly Best for
15 cup bag About fifteen cups Trying it, or a tea you rotate through
70 cup bag About seventy cups The one you drink every day — better value per cup

✨ Temple Tip — brew it properly and nobody will guess

Decaf gets its reputation from being under-brewed as well as under-leafed — people treat it as a lesser tea and make it weakly, which proves the point they were expecting. Give this the same leaf, heat and time you would give a full-caffeine black and it holds up.

Questions we get asked

How is the caffeine removed?
A non-toxic CO2 process, which reduces the caffeine in the black tea by about 97%. No chemical solvents.
Is it caffeine-free?
No — about 97% is removed, so a small amount remains. Low-caffeine is the accurate description, and worth knowing if you are highly sensitive.
How many cups will I get?
About fifteen from the 15-cup bag and about seventy from the 70-cup bag, before reinfusing.
Does it taste weaker than normal black tea?
Less than you would expect. It is tannic and full-bodied with nutty pecan notes, which is unusual for a decaf.
Where is it grown?
Biketti, in Tamil Nadu, southern India, at around 7,000 feet.

More from Tea & Teaware. Loose leaf wants a pot rather than an infuser ball, and the two-cup glass teapot is the one we keep on the counter.

In short

Decaf Black Loose Leaf Tea is a decaffeinated loose leaf black tea from August Uncommon Tea. The leaf is organic, grown at 7,000 ft in Biketti, Tamil Nadu, and decaffeinated by a non-toxic CO2 process that removes about 97% of the caffeine without solvents. It is powerful and tannic with a strong body and nutty pecan notes, and people drink it in the evening when a full-strength black tea is not an option. It is sold loose in a 15-cup bag or a 70-cup bag, starting at $12.99, and brewed near boiling for three to four minutes. Roughly 3% of the caffeine remains, so it is reduced rather than caffeine-free.
