Decaf usually means a thinner cup, and most people accept that as the price. This one does not ask you to. It is powerful and tannic with a strong body and nutty pecan notes — a proper black tea that happens to have had the caffeine taken out.

The leaf is organic, grown at 7,000 feet in Biketti, Tamil Nadu, and decaffeinated by a non-toxic CO2 process that removes about 97% of the caffeine. No solvents, and no hollowed-out flavor to apologise for at four in the afternoon.

At a glance

  • Fifteen tea bags
  • 97% of the caffeine removed by a non-toxic CO2 process
  • Grown at 7,000 ft in Biketti, Tamil Nadu, India
  • Tasting notes: powerful and tannic, strong body, nutty pecan
  • Ingredients: organic black tea from Biketti, Tamil Nadu, India
  • Also sold as loose leaf, in 15-cup and 70-cup bags

How to use it

  • Near-boiling water — around 205°F / 96°C. Decaf leaf still wants full heat.
  • Three to four minutes. This one has the body to take a longer steep than most decafs.
  • The evening tea. This is the cup for after dinner, when a black tea would otherwise be out of the question.
  • Takes milk without thinning out.
  • Steep it twice if you want a lighter second cup.

How the Essentials range compares

Tea Character Leaf Water
Bright Green Sweet lemon, honeysuckle, mild Japanese kukicha green ~175°F / 80°C
English Breakfast Bracing tannin, bittersweet cocoa South Indian black ~205°F / 96°C
Black Gold Malty, caramel, shortbread Yunnan black ~205°F / 96°C
Earl Grey Silky bergamot, note of orange South Indian & Ceylon black ~205°F / 96°C
Decaf Black Tannic, strong body, nutty pecan South Indian black, CO2 decaf ~205°F / 96°C

✨ Temple Tip — decaf is not caffeine-free

97% removed is a great deal, but it is not all of it. If you are highly caffeine-sensitive or avoiding it on medical advice, treat this as low-caffeine rather than none, and keep that in mind for a late cup.

Questions we get asked

How is the caffeine removed?
By a non-toxic CO2 process, which reduces the caffeine in the black tea by about 97%. No chemical solvents are involved.
Is it completely caffeine-free?
No. Around 97% of the caffeine is removed, so a small amount remains. Low-caffeine is the honest description.
Does it taste like a compromise?
Less than most decafs. It is tannic and full-bodied with nutty pecan notes, which is unusual for decaffeinated black tea.
Where is it grown?
Biketti, in Tamil Nadu, southern India, at around 7,000 feet of elevation.
Is there a loose leaf version?
Yes — Decaf Black loose leaf, in a 15-cup or 70-cup bag.

More evening-friendly options in Tea & Teaware, and the two-cup glass teapot if you want the pot on the table rather than the bag in the cup.

In short

Decaf Black Tea Bags is a decaffeinated bagged black tea from August Uncommon Tea. The leaf is organic, grown at 7,000 ft in Biketti, Tamil Nadu, and decaffeinated by a non-toxic CO2 process that removes about 97% of the caffeine without solvents. It brews powerful and tannic with a strong body and nutty pecan notes, which is why people reach for it after dinner when a full-strength black tea is not wanted. A box of fifteen tea bags costs $12.99, brewed near boiling for three to four minutes. About 3% of the original caffeine remains, so it is reduced rather than caffeine-free.
