Who Is Temple of Desire? A German Temple, a Married Couple, and Why We Crossed the Atlantic

The story behind Temple of Desire: Julia and Leif Daniel Schmidt, twenty years of ritual practice, 5,900+ customers across Europe — and why the temple now ships from US makers.

Julia and Leif Daniel Schmidt, founders of Temple of Desire, at their altar

On August 10, 2026, templeofdesire.com opened its doors. This is the long answer to the question we get asked most: who is actually behind Temple of Desire?

Quick answer

Temple of Desire is run by married couple Julia and Leif Daniel Schmidt. Founded in Germany with 5,900+ customers across Europe, the American store opened on August 10, 2026, shipping from US makers. Leif Daniel has practiced ritual work for over twenty years and offers two personal ritual services.

Two people, one temple

Temple of Desire is not a brand invented in a marketing meeting. It is the working life of a married couple: Julia and Leif Daniel Schmidt. We built the first temple in Germany — templeofdesire.de — and grew it, order by order, into a shop that has served more than 5,900 customers across Europe and a magazine, the Desire Diaries, that now holds over 1,200 articles in its German edition alone.

These days we no longer live in one fixed place. The temple travels with us — and that is not a metaphor for homelessness but the honest shape of our life: the work happens wherever the altar is set up, and the writing happens wherever there is a quiet hour and a candle.

Leif Daniel: twenty years at the working table

Leif Daniel came to ritual work long before it was an aesthetic. For more than twenty years he has practiced the old way — candle work, spoken ritual, protection and cleansing work, learned by doing and by failing and by doing again. Over those years he has performed hundreds of rituals in person, for people who sat across the table from him, and written around two hundred rituals individually for people he never met in person but came to know through their letters.

That work continues in the American temple. There are exactly two ways to work with him directly: a Personal Magic Ritual, written for your situation and performed by you — or a Ritual by a Master's Hand, which he performs himself, for you, at his own working table. Everything about both offers is explained on the Rituals page, including the part most shops leave out: what he will not promise you.

Julia: the standard behind the curation

If Leif is the temple's hands, Julia is its threshold — nothing enters the shop without passing her. She runs the curation: where a material comes from, how it was harvested, who made it, whether it survives daily use. The rule she works by is simple and merciless: if we would not put it on our own altar, it does not go in the shop. No mass-produced filler, no drop-shipped mystery goods, no promises we cannot keep.

That is what “curated in Germany” means on this site. The standard was built in Germany over years of European trade — and for the American store, every order ships from US makers we chose by exactly that standard, so your candle does not cross an ocean to reach you.

What we sell — and what we refuse to sell

The American temple opened with over 580 pieces across ritual candles, sacred smoke, crystals and stones, ritual oils, spiritual jewelry, tarot, books and divination, sound and vibration, the sacred kitchen and altar and home. If you do not know where to begin, the Find Your Ritual questionnaire takes one minute and points you somewhere honest.

Just as important is what we refuse: no guaranteed outcomes, no medical claims, no fabricated reviews, no fake sale prices. Occult retail is full of all four. We would rather sell you one candle you trust than ten you doubt.

Honesty as a system, not a slogan

The Desire Diaries — our magazine — follows a rule we believe no other shop in this field enforces: every claim in our articles is labeled. VERIFIED when documented sources support it. TRADITIONAL when a named tradition hands it down. LIVED PRACTICE when it is what we do and observe ourselves. NOT PROVEN when it is commonly repeated but we could not stand it up — and we say so instead of quietly leaving it out. Who writes, and by what standards, is public: see The Editorial Desk and The Quills of the Temple.

When a specialist writes in and shows us we got something wrong, we correct the article and change its date. That has already happened. It is the intended outcome, not an embarrassment.

Two temples, one standard

The German temple at templeofdesire.de remains what it always was — the origin, with its own shop and the German edition of the Desire Diaries. The American temple at templeofdesire.com is not a translation of it but a sibling: same standards, same couple, own makers, own inventory in dollars, shipped domestically. If you read German, the German magazine is a deep archive; if you do not, its strongest pieces are steadily arriving here in English.

Questions people actually ask us

Is Temple of Desire a real shop with real people behind it?

Yes. Temple of Desire is run by Julia and Leif Daniel Schmidt, a married couple, as Temple of desire LLC. The German store has served more than 5,900 customers across Europe. You can reach a human at 28@templeofdesire.com — replies come from us, not from a ticket machine.

Where do US orders ship from?

From makers in the United States, selected by the same curation standard as our German store. Orders typically ship within 3 business days and may arrive in more than one parcel, since each maker ships their own craft.

Does Leif Daniel really perform the rituals himself?

Yes. The Ritual by a Master's Hand is performed personally by Leif Daniel — it is deliberately not scalable, and availability is limited by his working hours. The Personal Magic Ritual is written by him individually for your situation, for you to perform yourself.

Do you guarantee results?

No — and we put that in writing on every relevant page. Ritual work is not a vending machine, and anyone guaranteeing outcomes in this field is selling something else. What we guarantee is the work itself: done properly, done personally, with honest materials.

If this is your first visit: the welcome code NEOPHYTE takes 10 % off your entire first order — including Leif Daniel's personal ritual work. The door is open. — Julia & Leif Daniel
