To calculate it, assign A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3, and Y = 7 when Y acts as a vowel, add all the vowel values and reduce to one digit, stopping at 11, 22 or 33. Where this number sits
Numerology's core numbers divide the work. We have covered three of them already, and this is the fourth, so it is worth putting the whole set on one line before going further.

The split between soul urge and personality is the neat idea in the system: vowels are the sounds you cannot make without opening, consonants are the sounds shaped by stopping the air. Whether that carries any weight is a separate question, but as a piece of design it is at least internally coherent, which is more than a lot of divination systems manage.
How to calculate it
You need the Pythagorean chart — the standard one in English-language numerology, in which the letters of the alphabet are numbered 1 to 9 in order and then start again.

The Y problem, which the system has never resolved
Look at the last two rows of that table again. Same name, two different answers — a 1 and an 8, which most numerologists would describe as close to opposite temperaments. The only difference is whether the Y in Mary counted.
The most defensible rule in circulation is phonetic: Y is a vowel when it supplies the vowel sound of its syllable, and a consonant when it does not. By that rule:

Take the disagreement seriously rather than picking a side quietly
A system in which a common letter can move a person between two contradictory readings, with no authority able to settle it, is telling you something about its own precision. That is not a reason to throw it out. It is a reason not to treat the output as a measurement.
If a practitioner hands you a soul urge number and does not mention that your name contains a contested letter, they either did not check or did not want to complicate the reading. Both are worth noticing.
The harder problem: which name?
The standard instruction is to use the full name exactly as written on your birth certificate. It sounds precise. It quietly assumes a life that a great many people have not had.

There is no authority to appeal to here, so here is our position plainly. If you are using numerology as a reflective tool — which is the only use we would defend — then the name you actually answer to is the defensible input. It is the name you hear across a room, the one attached to your sense of yourself, and the one whose vowels you have been living inside. A framework about your heart's desire that requires you to use a name you have discarded is not being rigorous. It is being literal about the wrong thing.
If you want both, run both. Two numbers and the difference between them is more interesting material than one number treated as a verdict.
And there is a second chart entirely
Everything above uses the Pythagorean system. There is a competing one, usually called Chaldean, which assigns different values, runs 1 to 8 rather than 1 to 9, and reserves 9 as sacred. It will hand you a different soul urge number from the same name, and its practitioners will tell you it is the older and more authentic method.
Both are commonly sold as ancient. Neither can be. The Pythagorean chart maps onto the modern English alphabet, which did not exist in Pythagoras's lifetime in anything like its current form — and the practice as we have it was assembled in the early twentieth century, principally by L. Now the instruction. The third column is where the value is. Almost everyone reads their own number and agrees with the middle column, which proves nothing — that is the Forer effect, demonstrated by Bertram Forer in 1949 when he gave a class an identical personality profile assembled from a newsstand astrology book and they rated it, on average, 4.3 out of 5 for accuracy. Generous, general descriptions get endorsed by nearly everyone.
The failure mode column is harder to agree with automatically, because it costs something. If it stings, the reading has done the only work it is capable of doing.
What this number cannot do
It cannot tell you what you want. You already know; the number gives you a vocabulary and a permission structure for saying it.
It cannot tell you whether to leave a job or a relationship. Any reading that arrives at an instruction that specific has stopped describing you and started advising you, and the two are not the same service.

Ten minutes and a piece of paper. This is worth doing whether or not you find the arithmetic persuasive.
1. Write your name and circle every vowel. Slowly. It is a small act of attention on something you normally scan past.
2. Do the addition. Get your number. Read the middle column above.
3. Now write, in one sentence, what you want — without the word but, without a plan for getting it, and without a justification. Most people cannot manage this on the first try, which is the finding.
4. Read the failure-mode column for your number, and write one sentence about whether you recognise it.
5. Put the paper somewhere you will find it in six months. Not to check whether the number was right — to check whether the sentence was.
