How to use it
Set the bowl on its ring or cushion on a stable, level surface. Never play it hand-held on a hard surface without padding — quartz is strong in resonance and brittle at the rim.
Strike first, then circle. A single soft strike on the outer wall with the suede mallet opens the tone; from there, run the mallet slowly around the outside of the rim with even pressure until the note builds and holds itself. If the bowl chatters, you are moving too fast or pressing too hard.
For personal practice, sit close and let one strike ring out completely before the next. For a group, place the bowl slightly off-centre in the room rather than dead centre — the sound field is more even that way.

Frequently asked questions
What does 396 Hz mean?
396 Hz is the lowest of the six Solfeggio tones, historically labelled UT. In sound work it is the tone traditionally used to open a session. The number describes the pitch the bowl is tuned to — nothing more, nothing less.
Do I need a mallet and a ring?
Yes. A suede mallet gives you the sustained singing tone and a rubber mallet gives you a rounder strike. The ring or cushion keeps the bowl stable and stops the base from damping the sound. Check the listing for what is included with this bowl.
Is quartz fragile?
Quartz is hard but it does not forgive impact. Do not knock two bowls together, do not set it directly on stone or tile, and carry it in a padded bag. Handled with a little care it will outlive you.
How do I clean it?
A soft dry cloth for dust; a barely damp cloth for fingerprints. No soap, no soaking, no abrasives — the galvanised finish is part of the surface, not a coating you can scrub.
Can I use it if I have never played one?
Yes. A crystal bowl is one of the few instruments that sounds good the first time you touch it. Slow, even pressure is the whole technique.
