Four panels, carved and gilded on both faces, from early twentieth-century China. One side shows two majestic dragons playing with a ball in the sky — 双龙戏珠, double dragon play ball, a motif Chinese artists have returned to in painting, carving and architecture for centuries. The reverse carries a denser design of multiple dragons and heavier gilding.
At roughly 22 inches wide and 106 inches tall each, these are architectural in scale. Left open they are a screen of carved line and gold; stretched with a light fabric of your own choosing they become a solid room divider. Either way, both sides are finished, so there is no wrong way to place them in a room.
At a glance
- Early 20th century, China · item no. DR2214
- Set of 4 panels
- Hand-carved and gilded on both front and back
- Approx. 22.0"W x 1.5"D x 106.0"H per panel
- Colours: black, gold, multicolour · material: wood
- Front motif: 双龙戏珠, two dragons playing with a ball
How to use it
Place them where both faces can be seen if you possibly can — a room divider standing free, or across a corner. The reverse carving is not a lesser side, and hanging the set flat against a wall gives up half of what you bought.
To close the panels into a solid divider, attach a light fabric of your own choice behind the carving. This is how these screens were traditionally finished and it lets you change the character of the piece without touching the wood.
They are over a century old and nearly nine feet tall. Anchor or brace a standing arrangement, keep them out of direct sun and away from damp, and dust with a soft dry brush so the gilding is not rubbed.

✨ Temple Tip
Before you commit to fabric, live with them open for a week. Most people who plan a solid divider end up keeping the carving unbacked once they see what the light does through it in the late afternoon.
