Gold vermeil is a layer of gold over sterling silver, and every polish dip and abrasive cloth takes some of that layer with it. A soft, dry cloth after wear removes the oils that dull it, which is genuinely all the maintenance it wants. Save the silver polish for solid silver pieces.
