A sphere is the hardest shape to cut from selenite and the most rewarding one to own, because the fibrous grain that runs through the crystal meets the curved surface at a different angle everywhere you look. Turn it and a pale band of light travels across the ball — a chatoyant sweep that no flat-cut selenite can produce.

This is the 6 cm size, weighing between 250 and 300 grams: a sphere that sits in one palm. Moroccan material, polished, and sold individually.

How to use it

Selenite spheres want a ring stand or a shallow dish, both because they roll and because raising them off the surface lets light reach the underside. Set beside a candle or a lamp, the fibres carry the light through the body of the ball and it glows rather than reflects.

The care rule is short and non-negotiable: keep it dry. Selenite is soft gypsum. Water will lift the polish, roughen the surface and, given enough exposure, dissolve the piece. Dust it with a dry cloth and keep it well away from bathrooms and windowsills.

6 cm or 8 cm

Size Diameter Weight Feel
This sphere 6 cm 250–300 g Sits in one palm; the everyday size
Larger option 8 cm 500–560 g (18–20 oz) Needs two hands and a proper stand; a display piece

✨ Temple Tip

Hold it up beside a single candle in a dark room and turn it slowly. Selenite's fibrous structure produces a moving band of light across the curve — the same optical effect that makes cat's eye stones work, but at a scale you can actually watch.

Questions we get asked

Can I put it in water?

No. Selenite is a soft gypsum mineral — it scratches easily and it does not like water. Dust it with a dry, soft cloth and keep it away from sinks, windowsills that catch rain, and damp bathrooms. Never soak or rinse it.

How big is 6 cm in practice?

Roughly 2.5 inches across — a sphere that closes comfortably inside one hand, weighing 250 to 300 grams.

Is a stand included?

No, the sphere is sold on its own. A simple ring stand or a small dish keeps it from rolling and lets light reach underneath it.

Is this the exact sphere pictured?

It is sold individually from a batch of the same size and material, so expect one sphere of similar character rather than the identical piece photographed. This is natural stone, so no two pieces are identical. Colour, banding and internal inclusions vary from the photographs — that variation is the point of buying a natural specimen rather than a manufactured object.

Will it scratch?

Yes, easily — selenite is one of the softest minerals you will own. Keep it away from keys, other crystals and anything metal, and it holds its polish indefinitely.

One palm, 6 cm, and a band of light that moves when you do.

In short

The Selenite Sphere 6 cm is a polished Moroccan selenite ball from Rare Earth Gallery, roughly 2.5 inches across and 250 to 300 grams. The fibrous grain running through the crystal meets the curved surface at a different angle at every point, so a pale band of light travels across the ball as it is turned. It is palm-sized and usually set on a ring stand or in a shallow dish, often near a candle or lamp so light carries through the body of the sphere. It costs $9.95 and is sold individually. Selenite is soft and water-soluble, so the sphere chips easily if dropped and should not be washed.
