Don José Campos has been a practising shaman for twenty-five years, and this is his first book. He writes about ayahuasca with a gentleness that is rare in the literature — no bravado, no traveller's tall tales, just an account of what he was shown and how long it took him to accept it.

Around his voice, others gather. Pablo Amaringo, the world-famous visionary painter, talks about his art and about the shocking reasons he stopped practising. Julio Arce Hidalgo, biochemist and philosopher, brings a different lens. Don Solón, at ninety-two the sole surviving maestro of Don José's teachers, closes the circle. Charles Grob provides the foreword; Alberto Roman translates.

How to use it

Read it as an introduction rather than a manual. Campos is describing a tradition, its teachers and its cosmology — including the idea, which he says took him a long time to sit with, that everything has consciousness.

Amaringo's chapters reward slow reading. He is talking about his paintings and about why he walked away from practice, and the two subjects turn out to be the same subject.

Keep it near the books you return to rather than the ones you finish. This is a first-person account of a living tradition, and it reads differently the second time.

✨ Temple Tip

If the subject has ever felt closed to you because every account seemed designed to impress, start here. Campos is the rare narrator who sounds more humbled by the material at the end than he did at the beginning.
