Hunter's Moon 2026: Date, Time and Taurus Ritual

A large amber full moon rising just above a dark treeline over a harvested stubble field at dusk
Quick answer

The Hunter's Moon of 2026 is full at 04:12 UTC on 26 October. In US terms that is 12:12 a.m. EDT on Monday 26 October, but 11:12 p.m. CDT, 10:12 p.m. MDT and 9:12 p.m. PDT on Sunday 25 October, so for most of the country it is a Sunday night event. US daylight saving time does not end until 1 November, a week later, unlike Europe. The moon sits at about 3 degrees of Taurus opposite a Scorpio sun, the axis astrology reads as holding on versus letting go, and Venus, ruler of Taurus, has been retrograde since 3 October, which practitioners take as a reason to take stock rather than sign contracts, split up or make large purchases before Venus turns direct in mid-November. On 27 and 28 October the waning moon passes the Pleiades. The limit: astrology describes a mood, not an event, and no reliable effect of the moon on sleep is established.

The Hunter's Moon of 2026 is the full moon of October, and for most of the United States it falls on the night of Sunday, 25 October rather than on Monday the 26th — the date you will see on European calendars. It sits at about 3 degrees of Taurus, opposite a Scorpio sun, with Venus retrograde. Here is the exact time in your zone, what is worth going outside for, what the astrology reads into it, and where the reading stops.

The exact time, in your time zone

The moon reaches full at 04:12 UTC on 26 October 2026. That single instant lands on two different calendar dates depending on where you are standing:

One moment, two dates: the October 2026 full moon across US time zones
Time zone Local date and time Where the moon is
Eastern (EDT) Monday 26 Oct, 12:12 a.m. Near its highest point in the south
Central (CDT) Sunday 25 Oct, 11:12 p.m. High in the south-east, still climbing
Mountain (MDT) Sunday 25 Oct, 10:12 p.m. Well up in the east
Pacific (PDT) Sunday 25 Oct, 9:12 p.m. Risen a few hours earlier, low to mid east
Alaska (AKDT) Sunday 25 Oct, 8:12 p.m. Recently risen in the east
Hawaii (HST) Sunday 25 Oct, 6:12 p.m. Rising around sunset

Two things European moon calendars will get wrong for you. First, the date: only the Eastern time zone sees this full moon on the 26th, and only by twelve minutes. Everywhere else in the country it is Sunday night. Second, the clocks: Europe ends summer time on 25 October, so German coverage frames this as the first full moon of winter time. US daylight saving time does not end until Sunday 1 November — a full week later. Nothing about your clock changes before this moon.

Why this one is genuinely worth going outside for

A full moon culminates near local midnight, which means the exact moment of fullness catches this one high in American skies — around its peak on the East Coast, well up everywhere else. In central Europe the same instant finds it low in the west, close to setting. For once the better seat is on this side of the Atlantic.

Then stay with it for two more nights. On 27 and 28 October the waning moon moves through Taurus past the Pleiades, the small tight cluster high in the eastern sky through October. A nearly full moon sitting beside that cluster is one of the better sights of the autumn sky and needs no equipment at all.

Why it is called the Hunter's Moon

Worth noting where this name comes from, because it is the one piece of the tradition that is already at home here. The Hunter's Moon is the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon — the Harvest Moon being the one nearest the September equinox, which in 2026 was the full moon of 26 September. The name travels through North American and European farming calendars and was spread most widely by the Old Farmer's Almanac, an American publication. The logic is agricultural rather than astrological: the fields are cleared, game is visible across open stubble, and the moon rises soon after sunset for several evenings running. Harvest first, then stockpiling.

What the astrology reads into it

Every full moon is an opposition: sun and moon exactly across from each other. This one puts the sun at roughly 3 degrees of Scorpio and the moon at roughly 3 degrees of Taurus — in astrological terms, the axis of having and letting go.

Taurus is the sign of keeping: it builds, secures, enjoys, stays. Scorpio is its opposite pole: it digs, transforms, gives up what has stopped carrying weight. A Taurus full moon under a Scorpio sun is read as asking one question in several forms — what is actually worth something to me, and what am I holding on to only because I have got used to the weight of it?

Venus retrograde is what makes this one heavier

Venus rules Taurus, and Venus has been retrograde since 3 October, moving back through Scorpio toward Libra. So the moon is full in a sign whose ruling planet is apparently running backwards. Practitioners read that as amplification: old relationship questions, old valuations, old money decisions come back to the table, and the full moon brings them to a head.

The working rule that comes with it: under a retrograde Venus, take stock rather than close deals. No new contracts over property, no impulsive breakups, no large purchases. Venus turns direct in mid-November; whatever you see now is allowed to sit until then. Mercury also turns retrograde in Scorpio on 24 October, two days before this moon, which is the reason so much of the astrological writing about late October 2026 reads as one long instruction to slow down.

A ritual that fits Taurus: an inventory

Most full moon rituals are about release. For a Taurus moon that is only half right — Taurus does not let go, it sorts. So this one is an inventory.

  1. Early evening, Sunday 25 October. Clear a table. Light one candle. Put down five things you own that mean something to you. Not the expensive ones — the ones you would miss.
  2. Take each one in your hand and answer out loud or on paper: why do I have this, what does it still give me, would I choose it again today? You will find that for three of them the answer is immediate. The other two are the ones this is about.
  3. Then turn it around. Write down one thing you have been refusing yourself for months although you could afford it — in money, in time, or in permission. A Taurus full moon is where thrift and self-denial stop looking alike.
  4. The next morning, read it back and decide nothing. Venus is retrograde; decisions can wait until mid-November. What a full moon can do is show you what the question is.

Five days later, on 31 October, Samhain opens the dark half of the year. What you sort now is what you have to work with there.

What we are not claiming

We are not telling you this moon will increase your money, save your relationship or make a decision for you. Astrology describes a mood, not an event.

We are not telling you the moon governs your body or your sleep. The study most often cited in this direction, Cajochen and colleagues in 2013, reported a lunar effect on sleep in an existing dataset; later attempts to replicate it in larger samples did not find a reliable effect. If you sleep badly on full moon nights, that experience is real — the cause is not established.

And we are not telling you that "Venus retrograde" is a force acting on you. Retrograde motion is a perspective effect: seen from Earth, Venus appears to move backwards because the two planets travel at different speeds around the sun. Astrology uses the image. It does not claim a physical push.

If the inventory turns up something that unsettles rather than sorts — debt, a relationship that has stopped holding, a body that needs help — the next step is not a ritual. It is someone who listens, or a professional who knows what to do.

What this moon touches, by sign

The notes below go by your sun sign. They get sharper if you know your rising sign, in which case read that entry too.

The Taurus full moon of October 2026 by sign
Sign What it lands on
Taurus Your own full moon. Identity, body, the picture other people hold of you. A moment for stocktaking rather than upheaval
Scorpio It sits directly opposite you: partnership, agreements, the other person. What you see in them is usually your own question
Leo and Aquarius Tension between work and home, visibility and retreat. Something is asking to be given priority
Cancer and Pisces An easy angle: friends, networks, conversation. One good talk will do more than a plan
Virgo and Capricorn Earth trine. Creativity, pleasure, children, travel. The lightest full moon of your year
Aries and Gemini Money, possessions, what has been kept out of sight. Something comes due, literally or otherwise
Libra and Sagittarius Work, health, routines, shared resources. What you do daily shows whether it holds

Where to watch from, practically

A rising full moon looks enormous near the horizon and ordinary an hour later. The size does not change - it is a perceptual effect that has been studied for a century without a settled explanation - but the effect is strongest with something on the horizon for scale. A ridgeline, a water tower, a row of buildings. An open field with nothing in it produces the least impressive version of the same moon.

Moonrise on the evening of 25 October falls close to sunset, so the useful window is the hour after the sun goes down, looking east. That is the one to plan around: it is warm-coloured, it is low, and it does not require staying up. If you would rather see the exact moment of fullness, that is late evening on the 25th in the Central, Mountain and Pacific zones and just after midnight on the 26th in the East - and the moon will be high and small and white, which is a different and less photogenic thing.

Clouds are the usual spoiler in late October across much of the country. The moon looks essentially full for the two evenings on either side, so treat 24 through 28 October as the window rather than pinning everything on one night.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Hunter's Moon in 2026?

The moon is full at 04:12 UTC on 26 October 2026. That is 12:12 a.m. EDT on Monday 26 October, but 11:12 p.m. CDT, 10:12 p.m. MDT and 9:12 p.m. PDT on Sunday 25 October. For most of the United States it is Sunday night.

Why do calendars give different dates for this full moon?

Because the instant of fullness falls just after midnight Eastern time. East of the Appalachians it is the 26th; in every other US time zone the same moment is still the 25th. European calendars list the 26th because it is already morning there.

Does the time change before the Hunter's Moon?

Not in the United States. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday 1 November 2026, a week after this full moon. European coverage may say otherwise because summer time ends there on 25 October.

What sign is the full moon of October 2026 in?

About 3 degrees of Taurus, opposite the sun at about 3 degrees of Scorpio. Astrologically that is read as the axis of holding on and letting go.

Why is October's full moon called the Hunter's Moon?

It is the full moon following the Harvest Moon. The name comes from North American and European farming calendars and was spread widely by the Old Farmer's Almanac: fields are cleared, game is easy to see, and the moon rises soon after sunset for several evenings.

Is there anything else to see around it?

Yes. On the nights of 27 and 28 October the waning moon passes close to the Pleiades cluster in Taurus. It is visible with the naked eye and is one of the better sights of the autumn sky.

Does a full moon affect sleep?

The evidence is contradictory. A 2013 analysis by Cajochen and colleagues reported an effect, and later replication attempts in larger samples did not confirm it. No reliable effect is established.
