A mala is a counting tool before it is a necklace, and the difference shows in how it is strung — beads sized to be moved one at a time under the thumb rather than to sit flat against the collarbone. This one is built on amethyst, with carnelian, blue quartz, blue apatite and blue tiger's eye worked through the strand.

The colour logic is deliberate: cool purple and blue running most of the way round, interrupted by the warm orange of the carnelian. At 16.5 inches it sits high rather than long, so it works as a worn piece as much as a practice one.

How to use it

For counting practice, hold the strand over the middle finger and move one bead at a time with the thumb, working in one direction. Worn, at 16.5 inches it sits at the base of the throat — short enough to layer under a longer chain without tangling.

Take it off before showering or swimming. Strung gemstone beads are held on a cord, and repeated wetting weakens the thread long before it affects the stones. Store it coiled flat rather than hung, which keeps tension off the knots.

What is on the strand

Stone Colour it brings
Amethyst The base of the mala — purple, the dominant colour
Carnelian Warm orange; the contrast note against the purples and blues
Blue quartz Soft, cloudy pale blue
Blue apatite The most saturated blue on the strand
Blue tiger's eye Banded and chatoyant — it shifts as the light moves

✨ Temple Tip

If you use it for counting rather than wearing, work it in the same direction every time. The cord settles into the movement, the knots bed in, and after a few weeks the beads pass under the thumb with far less friction than they do new.

Questions we get asked

How long is it?

16.5 inches, weighing 66 grams. That is a shorter mala — it sits high on the neck rather than hanging at the chest.

Which stones are included?

Amethyst as the base, with carnelian, blue quartz, blue apatite and blue tiger's eye beads worked through the strand.

Is it a full 108-bead mala?

Rare Earth Gallery do not state a bead count for this piece, only the length and weight, so we cannot confirm it. If the count matters for your practice, ask us before ordering and we will check with the supplier.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Better not to. Water weakens the stringing cord over time, and blue tiger's eye and apatite both prefer to stay dry.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the beads with a soft dry cloth. Avoid jewellery dips and ultrasonic cleaners — they attack the cord and the knots rather than the stones.

Purple, blue, and one warm interruption — a strand built to be moved through.

In short

The Amethyst Mala Necklace is a beaded prayer strand from Rare Earth Gallery, built on amethyst with carnelian, blue quartz, blue apatite and blue tiger's eye worked through it. The beads are sized to be moved one at a time under the thumb rather than to sit flat against the collarbone, which is what separates a mala from an ordinary necklace. The strand measures 16.5 inches and weighs 66 grams, so it sits high on the neck and is worn as often as it is used for counting practice. It costs $147.95. The beads are natural gemstones, so tone and pattern vary and no two strands are identical.
