A cacao nib is a seed that could have become a tree. Most people meet them as a crunchy addition to trail mix and granola, which is fine — but the nib had a long life before it reached the jar, and knowing that changes how it tastes.
These come from fermented beans grown on regenerative family farms rather than monoculture plantations, lightly roasted in micro batches, then shelled and cracked into pieces. Ora calls them activated rather than raw: dried cacao beans keep for a decade, but a light roast blossoms the aroma, and lab testing confirmed it does not diminish the beneficial compounds.

How to use it
Scatter them. Over yoghurt, oats, ice cream, a salad with something bitter in it, or into trail mix. They add crunch and a dry cocoa note rather than sweetness.
Bake them in place of chocolate chips when you want texture without sugar — cookies, banana bread, granola clusters.
Blend them into smoothies for body and a roasted edge.
One honest limitation: nibs will not melt with heat, so you cannot make drinking chocolate from them without professional equipment. For a cup, use ceremonial cacao instead. (A traditional Central American metate will do it by hand, if you can find one.)
Nibs or ceremonial cacao
| Cacao Nibs | Ceremonial Cacao | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Cracked roasted pieces | Whole bean, ground into a solid block |
| Melts | No | Yes |
| Use | Eating, baking, topping, blending | Drinking |
| Texture | Crunchy | Smooth once whisked |
✨ Temple Tip
Keep a small jar of nibs next to where you make your morning cacao. A few on the surface of the finished drink give you texture on the first sip and a soft, soaked bite at the very bottom of the cup.
Frequently asked questions
Why are they called activated rather than raw?
Because they are lightly roasted. Ora uses the word to reflect indigenous practice — drying stores the bean, a light roast opens its aroma. Lab testing confirmed the light roast does not diminish the beneficial compounds.
Can I make a drink from nibs?
Not without professional equipment — they will not melt with heat. Use ceremonial cacao for drinking, or a traditional metate if you want to do it by hand.
Are they sweetened?
No. They are unsweetened cracked cacao bean and taste rich and nutty rather than sweet.
What does regenerative sourcing mean here?
The cacao is grown in a regenerative agroforestry project in the Rwenzori Mountains rather than on a monoculture plantation, with a farming community that is 50% women and 70% under 35.
How should I store them?
Sealed, cool, dark and dry. They keep well, but they will pick up neighbouring smells if left open.
