There is a moment, right before a ritual begins, when the room still smells like the day you had. A little heat, a little oil, and that changes. This hand-carved soapstone burner from India is the quiet instrument that makes the change happen — no cords, no plastic, no hum. Just a tealight underneath and a shallow dish above.

Soapstone is soft enough to be carved by hand and dense enough to hold heat evenly, which is why it has been the traditional material for burners like this one for generations. At 3.5 inches it sits comfortably on a nightstand, a windowsill, or the corner of an altar without demanding the whole surface.

At a glance

  • Carved soapstone, made in India
  • 3.5 inches tall
  • Tealight-warmed — no electricity required
  • Open bowl design for oil and water
  • Tealight candle and essential oils are not included
  • Ships within 3 business days

How to use it

Set the burner on a heat-safe surface with space around it. Fill the upper bowl with a little water, then add a few drops of your oil to the water.

Place a lit tealight in the chamber below and let the warmth do the rest. Top up the water before it runs dry, and never leave a burning candle unattended.

When you are finished, let the stone cool completely, then wipe the bowl clean with a soft cloth.

Burner or spray — which suits your ritual?

Soapstone oil burner Ritual spray
Scent release Slow, builds over the session Instant, fades faster
Needs a flame Yes, one tealight No
Best for Long meditation, evening wind-down Quick reset between rooms
Leaves a residue Oil film in the bowl None

✨ Temple Tip

Add the water first, then the oil — never oil alone. Water spreads the heat, keeps the scent soft instead of sharp, and makes the bowl far easier to wipe out afterwards.

Questions & answers

Does the burner come with a tealight or oils?

No. The listing is for the carved soapstone burner only. Tealight candles and essential oils are sold separately.

How big is it?

3.5 inches tall. It is a compact piece designed to sit on a nightstand, shelf, or altar corner.

Where is it made?

It is hand-carved in India from soapstone.

Can I use wax melts instead of oil?

The bowl is designed for water and essential oil. Wax will harden in the dish and is far harder to clean out, so we do not recommend it.

Will each piece look exactly like the photo?

Because every burner is carved by hand, the pattern and stone tone vary a little from piece to piece. That variation is part of the object.

Light it, breathe once, and let the room catch up with you. #TempleOfDesire

In short

The Carved Soapstone Oil Burner is a tealight-warmed aromatherapy burner by Rare Earth Gallery, hand-carved in India. It is cut from soapstone, a soft, dense stone traditionally used for burners because it holds heat evenly, and stands 3.5 inches tall with an open bowl above a tealight chamber and no electrical parts. Practitioners add water and a few drops of essential oil to the bowl and light a tealight beneath it during meditation or an evening wind-down. It costs $42.95 and includes the burner only. Tealight candles and essential oils are sold separately, and the bowl is made for water and oil rather than wax melts.
