How to use it
Decide the orientation before you fix anything. With the top fragment in place the panel reads as architecture; without it, it reads as a headboard. Both are correct, and the fragment lifts away without tools.
Mounted on a wall, give it a plain surface and side lighting. The embossing is deep enough that raking light does more for it than any spotlight aimed straight on.
Treat it as the antique it is: keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators and damp, and dust with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, which can catch on the raised painted edges.

Do not restore the paint. The muting is the hundred and thirty years, and it is the only part of this panel that cannot be reproduced — a fresh coat of red would cost you the single thing that makes it worth having.
