Palo Santo means “Holy Wood,” and it has earned the name. Native to the coast of South America and related to Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal, this sacred wood has been burned in shamanic ceremony for centuries. Its gift is the reset: it raises the vibration of a room and leaves behind a spiritually uplifting atmosphere, especially when it follows other cleansing tools.

Sold by the stick, each roughly 4 inches long. The scent sits somewhere near cedar — warm, woody, and grounding — and it lingers gently rather than filling a room. In ceremonial traditions Palo Santo completes the energetic triad: sweetgrass invites, white sage purifies, and Palo Santo lifts what is left.

At a glance

  • Sold as: One stick, approximately 4 inches long
  • Origin: Ethically and sustainably harvested in South America
  • Botanical family: Related to Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal
  • Scent: Warm and woody, similar to cedar
  • Role in ceremony: Raises the vibration — the closing step of the triad

How to use it

  1. Ignite the end of the stick, preferably the end with the least amount of stems.
  2. Let it catch for a few seconds, then blow out the flame so the wood glows and smolders.
  3. Waft the smoke with a feather or your hand, or rest the stick on a heat-resistant surface such as an abalone shell.
  4. Hold crystals or jewelry in the smoke until it flows smoothly around them.
  5. Make sure the stick is fully extinguished before you leave it. Keep away from children, animals, and flammable materials.

The ceremonial triad

Sacred smoke Its role in the ceremony When to reach for it
Sweetgrass Calls the energies forth At the very start, to open the space
White Sage Clears and cleanses In the middle, to sweep out what is stale
Palo Santo Raises the vibration At the close, to lift the room

✨ Temple Tip — Palo Santo goes last, not first

The most common mistake is lighting Palo Santo to clear a room. That is sage’s job. Palo Santo is what you burn after the clearing, to get the energy dancing again. Clear first, lift second — the difference in how a room feels afterward is remarkable.

Questions we get asked

How many sticks do I get?

Palo Santo is sold by the stick. You will receive one stick, approximately 4 inches long.

Is your Palo Santo sustainably sourced?

Yes. Our Palo Santo is ethically and sustainably harvested from South America, supporting environmental responsibility and respect for the traditions it comes from.

Can I relight the same stick?

Yes. Palo Santo does not burn away like a sage bundle — a single stick can be lit, extinguished, and lit again many times.

What does it smell like?

Warm and woody, similar to cedar, with a grounding quality that lingers gently in a room.

Is this a health or medical product?

No. Our crystal and herbal products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and nothing here has been evaluated by the FDA. They are ritual and spiritual tools. Please consult a healthcare professional for medical questions, and speak with one before using herbal products if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.

When will it ship?

Ships within 3 business days from our US fulfillment partner.

In short

Palo Santo is a resinous South American wood, sold by Sacred Crystals as single sticks of roughly 4 inches. The tree is botanically related to frankincense, myrrh, and copal, and the wood is described as ethically and sustainably harvested in South America. Its scent is warm and woody, close to cedar. In the ceremonial triad Palo Santo is the closing step, burned after sweetgrass has invited and white sage has cleared, and crystals or jewelry are often held in the smoke. One stick is $3.75. A stick can be relit several times, but it must be fully extinguished before it is left.
