Two centimetres larger than the standard size sounds like a small difference until you pick it up: 8 cm of selenite weighs 500 to 560 grams, roughly double the 6 cm ball, and it needs two hands and a proper stand rather than a palm and a shelf. This is the display size.

Selenite gypsum from Morocco, ground and polished round so the fibrous internal grain meets the curved surface at every possible angle. The effect scales with the sphere — the band of light that travels across the surface as you turn it is wider and slower here than on a smaller ball.

How to use it

Use a proper stand. At this weight a sphere sitting loose on a shelf is a question of when rather than whether, and selenite is soft enough that a short fall onto a hard floor will chip or shatter it. A ring stand or a weighted dish solves it.

As with all selenite: keep it dry, dust it with a dry cloth, and keep it away from bathrooms, sinks and windowsills that catch rain. Water is the only thing that will genuinely destroy this piece.

8 cm or 6 cm

Size Diameter Weight Feel
This sphere 8 cm 500–560 g (18–20 oz) Two hands; a display piece that needs a stand
Smaller option 6 cm 250–300 g Fits one palm; the everyday handling size

✨ Temple Tip

Give it a stand with a wide base, not a narrow ring. Half a kilo of soft gypsum resting on three small contact points will eventually mark the polish where it sits — a broad, padded cradle spreads the load and keeps the surface unblemished.

Questions we get asked

How much heavier is this than the 6 cm sphere?

Roughly double: 500 to 560 grams against 250 to 300. In the hand the difference is more pronounced than the numbers suggest.

Can I wash it?

No. Selenite is a soft gypsum mineral — it scratches easily and it does not like water. Dust it with a dry, soft cloth and keep it away from sinks, windowsills that catch rain, and damp bathrooms. Never soak or rinse it.

Is a stand included?

No — the sphere is sold on its own. At this weight a stand is strongly recommended rather than optional.

Selenite or gypsum — which is it?

Both. Selenite is a crystalline variety of the mineral gypsum; Rare Earth Gallery describe this piece as a selenite gypsum sphere.

Is this the exact sphere pictured?

It is sold individually from a batch of the same size and material. This is natural stone, so no two pieces are identical. Colour, banding and internal inclusions vary from the photographs — that variation is the point of buying a natural specimen rather than a manufactured object.

Half a kilo of soft light — give it a stand and leave it somewhere you pass often.

In short

The Selenite Sphere 8 cm is the large size of Rare Earth Gallery's polished Moroccan gypsum ball, 8 centimetres across and 500 to 560 grams, roughly double the weight of the 6 cm version. Polishing brings the fibrous internal grain to the curved surface at every angle, producing a wide, slow band of light that travels across the sphere as it turns. At this weight it is a display piece handled with two hands rather than a palm stone. It is priced at $36.95 and sold individually. Selenite is soft enough to chip or shatter in a short fall onto a hard floor, so a proper stand is advisable rather than a loose shelf.
