What you actually need

Four things, and only one of them is negotiable.

A heatproof vessel. Ceramic, cast iron, brass or soapstone. A charcoal disc runs hot enough to crack glass, craze unsuitable glaze and scorch a wooden surface straight through a thin dish. This is the item people improvise and the item they should not.

Sand or ash, at least an inch deep. This is the part that gets skipped and it is not decorative. The sand insulates the bottom of the bowl from the disc, keeps the underside of the disc from suffocating, and gives you somewhere to bury the disc when you are finished. Play sand, aquarium sand, or the accumulated ash from previous burns all work. Fine white ash is the traditional material in Japanese and Middle Eastern practice and behaves best.

Charcoal discs. The round, self-lighting kind sold for incense — usually 33mm or 40mm, often with a small dished indentation on one face. They are self-lighting because they are impregnated with an oxidizing salt, typically potassium or sodium nitrate, which is why they catch from a single flame and spark across their own surface.

Tongs. Non-negotiable. You light the disc while holding it, and it goes from cold to sparking in seconds.

Optional but useful: a small spoon for placing resin, and a lid or screen if your burner has one.

How to light a charcoal disc, step by step

1. Prepare the bowl first. Sand in, levelled, at least an inch. Burner sitting on a heatproof surface — a trivet, a tile, a stone coaster. Not directly on a wooden table, not on a cloth altar runner.

2. Grip the disc in tongs, dished side up. Hold it at the edge, away from your body.

3. Light one edge and hold the flame there. Use a long lighter or a match. Within a few seconds you will see sparks begin to run across the surface with a faint crackling sound. Keep the flame on it until the sparking is self-sustaining — usually 10 to 20 seconds of direct flame.

4. Let it travel. Set the disc on the sand and leave it. The spark front crosses the whole disc in 30 to 60 seconds. Do not add anything yet.

5. Wait for the ash. This is the step everyone shortens and it is the one that determines whether your resin smells like frankincense or like burnt tar. Give it 5 to 10 minutes. The disc will go from black to a uniform grey-white ash coating with a dull orange glow underneath. That grey coat is what moderates the heat.

6. Add one small piece of resin. Pea-sized. Place it in the dished centre with a spoon or tongs — do not drop a handful on. It will begin to melt, bubble slightly and release smoke within seconds.

Temple tip

If your resin is producing black smoke and a bitter, acrid smell instead of a sweet one, the disc is too hot — you added the resin before the ash formed. Do not try to fix this by adding more resin. Lift the piece off with tongs, wait another five minutes, and start again with a fresh piece. Almost every complaint that resin incense "smells burnt" traces back to this one impatience, and the fix costs nothing but time. If you want a lower-heat alternative entirely, a room spray does a different job with none of the combustion.

How much resin, and how long each piece lasts

One pea-sized piece produces usable smoke for roughly 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the resin. Frankincense tears burn longer and cleaner than soft resins like benzoin or styrax, which melt quickly and can pool. Copal sits in the middle. Powdered resins burn fastest of all and are the easiest to overdo.

A single 33mm disc will stay hot for 45 minutes to over an hour, so you can add three or four pieces across one session. The practical limit is not the charcoal — it is the room. A pea of frankincense in a small closed bedroom is already a lot of smoke.

Beginners almost universally use too much. If in doubt, start with a piece smaller than you think is reasonable and add a second one twenty minutes later. You cannot un-smoke a room.

Why self-lighting charcoal behaves the way it does

Self-lighting incense charcoal is not simply compressed wood. It is charcoal powder bound and impregnated with an oxidizer — potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate, historically called saltpeter, the same class of compound that makes a fuse burn without external air. That is what produces the characteristic behavior: a single match ignites one edge, and the spark front then travels across the whole disc on its own, crackling as it goes.

Two consequences follow, and both are practical rather than academic.

First, the disc will keep going whether or not you want it to. There is no simmering it down. Once lit, it is hot for the better part of an hour, and the only ways to stop it are burying it in sand or dropping it in water.

Second, the nitrate is why the first minute smells sharp and slightly chemical, and why lighting the disc in the room you are about to sit in is a mistake. Light it, let the initial phase pass, and then bring it in — or accept that the opening minute of a resin session smells like a struck match rather than like frankincense.

Quick-light charcoal also produces more of that initial odor than natural bamboo or coconut-shell charcoal, which needs an external heat source to get going but has no nitrate phase. If the chemical opening bothers you, that is the trade you can make.

Ventilation, and the part most guides skip

Burning anything indoors produces fine particulate matter, and incense is a substantial indoor source of it. PM2.5 — particles small enough to travel deep into the lungs — is the metric that matters, and incense smoke measures high on it. Reviews of incense and indoor air quality consistently report elevated particulate levels during and after burning, with the effect strongest in small, poorly ventilated rooms. Resin on charcoal produces considerably more smoke per session than a single stick.

Charcoal combustion additionally produces carbon monoxide. In an ordinary room with a window cracked this is not a meaningful hazard; in a small sealed bathroom with no airflow, over an extended session, it is not something to be casual about.

None of this is a reason to abandon the practice, and we are not going to pretend it is. It is a reason to do three specific things: open a window or door for cross-ventilation while burning and for a while afterwards, keep sessions to what the ritual actually needs rather than leaving the disc running, and take the smoke seriously if anyone in the household has asthma or another respiratory condition — including pets, and birds especially, who are far more sensitive to airborne particulates than people are.

Burning resin does not cleanse a space of anything measurable. There is a body of research on the antimicrobial properties of certain plant smokes under laboratory conditions, and it is real, but it does not translate into a claim that a bowl of frankincense on your windowsill purifies your home, and we are not going to make that leap for you. Nothing in this article is a health claim, and no incense we sell is a treatment for anything.

What resin on charcoal does reliably do is mark a boundary in time. It requires ten minutes of preparation before anything happens, which means you cannot do it distractedly, and it fills a room with a scent strong enough to make the space feel categorically different from how it felt an hour ago. Scent is unusually good at marking transitions, and this is a practice built almost entirely around that. That is worth doing on its own terms.

Practically: how to work with this

  1. An inch of sand, minimum, every time. It insulates the vessel, feeds air to the underside of the disc, and gives you a way to extinguish it.
  2. Tongs, always. Light the disc in tongs, never in your fingers and never sitting in the bowl.
  3. Wait for the grey ash — 5 to 10 minutes. This is the single difference between sweet smoke and burnt smoke.
  4. One pea-sized piece at a time. Add a second after twenty minutes if the room can take it.
  5. Cross-ventilate during and after. A window and an interior door open beats a window alone.
  6. Never barbecue or cooking charcoal. It is not made for enclosed spaces and can carry accelerants.
  7. Extinguish deliberately. Bury the disc in the sand or drop it in water. Do not assume it has gone out because it looks grey — it stays dangerously hot long after it stops glowing.
  8. Never unattended, never within reach of children or pets. The vessel itself becomes hot enough to burn and stays that way well after the session ends.

How do I put out a charcoal disc when I am finished?

Do not leave it to burn out unattended and do not assume it is out because it has stopped glowing — a spent disc holds serious heat for a long time, and so does the vessel. Let the whole burner cool completely before moving it or emptying it, and never tip warm ash into a wastebasket.
