Earl Grey goes wrong when the bergamot is cheap — it turns soapy, and sits on top of the tea instead of inside it. This one does not. The bergamot is folded through a velvety black base until the whole cup reads as one thing rather than two.

The base is organic South Indian and Ceylon black tea, with organic cornflower petals in the blend. What comes through is silk rather than perfume, and a clear note of orange behind the citrus.

At a glance

  • Fifteen tea bags
  • Organic South Indian and Ceylon black tea with organic bergamot
  • Tasting notes: velvety, silky, a note of orange
  • Cornflower petals in the blend
  • Ingredients: organic South Indian black tea, organic Ceylon black tea, organic natural flavor of bergamot, organic cornflower petals

How to use it

  • Near-boiling water — around 205°F / 96°C.
  • Three minutes, and lift the bag out. Over-steeped Earl Grey turns the bergamot bitter before the tea does.
  • Plain, or with a slice of lemon. Milk works but mutes the citrus, which is most of what you came for.
  • An afternoon tea as much as a morning one — the bergamot makes it feel lighter than its strength suggests.
  • Keep it sealed and separate. Bergamot migrates; stored loose in a cupboard it will flavor everything near it.

How the Essentials range compares

Tea Character Leaf Water
Bright Green Sweet lemon, honeysuckle, mild Japanese kukicha green ~175°F / 80°C
English Breakfast Bracing tannin, bittersweet cocoa South Indian black ~205°F / 96°C
Black Gold Malty, caramel, shortbread Yunnan black ~205°F / 96°C
Earl Grey Silky bergamot, note of orange South Indian & Ceylon black ~205°F / 96°C
Decaf Black Tannic, strong body, nutty pecan South Indian black, CO2 decaf ~205°F / 96°C

✨ Temple Tip — store it away from your other teas

Bergamot is volatile and travels. An open box of Earl Grey next to a delicate green will hand its citrus straight over within a week. Keep this one sealed, and keep it on its own shelf.

Questions we get asked

What is bergamot?
A citrus fruit, closer to a bitter orange than a lemon. Its oil is what makes an Earl Grey an Earl Grey.
Why are there flower petals in it?
Organic cornflower petals are part of the blend — a traditional inclusion in Earl Grey.
Is it strong?
Medium. The black base is substantial but the bergamot lifts it, so it drinks lighter than English Breakfast.
Can I have it with milk?
You can, and plenty of people do. It softens the citrus considerably, so try it plain at least once first.
How should I store it?
Airtight and apart from your other teas — the bergamot will scent whatever it sits next to.

The full shelf lives in Tea & Teaware. Earl Grey shows its bergamot best in clear glass, so the double-walled tasting glass is not only decoration.

Citrus and silk, and a quiet hour to drink it in. #TempleOfDesire

In short

Earl Grey Tea Bags is a bagged bergamot black tea from August Uncommon Tea. The base is organic South Indian and Ceylon black tea with organic bergamot flavor and organic cornflower petals, giving a velvety cup with a note of orange rather than a soapy perfume character. People drink it in the afternoon as well as the morning, plain or with lemon. A box of fifteen tea bags costs $12.99. It is brewed near boiling, around 205F / 96C, for three minutes, and over-steeping turns the bergamot bitter. Bergamot migrates in storage, so the box is best kept sealed and away from other teas.
