A double wall, a thin lip, and a flare at the top — three small decisions that change how a tea reads. Most of what we call flavor is smell, and a straight-sided mug throws most of it past your face before you get to it.

This is a hand-blown borosilicate tasting glass, 12 oz (350 ml), 3.6″ in diameter and 5″ tall. The double wall insulates, so hot drinks stay hot, cold stay cold, and the outside stays comfortable to hold. The drinking lip is deliberately thin, and the slight flare at the rim widens the space where aroma collects before it reaches you.

At a glance

  • 12 oz / 350 ml, 3.6″ diameter × 5″ tall
  • Hand-blown borosilicate — small variations in size and shape are normal
  • Double-walled: insulating, and comfortable to hold when full of something hot
  • Thin lip and flared rim, so aroma collects where you will actually meet it
  • Hand wash only

How to use it

  • Smell before you sip, and again halfway down. The flare exists for this; a straight-sided mug gives you far less of it.
  • Fill to just below the flare rather than to the rim. The gap is where the aroma sits.
  • Use it for tea you are paying attention to. For a mug of builder's tea at your desk it is a waste of a good glass.
  • Expect it to cool slowly. Useful for a long sitting, less useful when you want to drink something quickly.
  • Hand wash. Double-walled glass can trap water between the layers in a dishwasher, and that is not recoverable.

✨ Temple Tip — the gap at the top is the point

The temptation with any glass is to fill it. Do not. The empty inch between the surface of the tea and the flared rim is where the aroma gathers — fill past it and you have built a very elegant mug that smells of nothing.

Questions we get asked

Why double-walled?
Insulation. The tea holds its temperature longer and the outside surface stays comfortable to hold, even with something very hot inside.
Can it go in the dishwasher?
No — hand wash only. Double-walled glass can trap water between the layers, and once that happens there is no way to get it out.
Is it fragile?
Borosilicate handles heat well, but it is still glass. Avoid sudden temperature changes and hard knocks.
Are they all identical?
No. Each is hand-blown, so small variations in size and shape are normal and expected.
What is it best for?
Tea you are actually tasting rather than drinking absent-mindedly — the Rare Leaves Sampler is worth drinking out of it.

Fill it from anything in Tea & Teaware. When you are brewing for two rather than one, the two-cup glass teapot is the matching piece.

Smell it first. That is most of the tea. #TempleOfDesire

In short

The Double-Walled Tasting Glass is a hand-blown borosilicate tea glass from August Uncommon Tea. It holds 12 oz / 350 ml, measures 3.6 in in diameter and 5 in tall, and has a double wall, a thin drinking lip and a flared rim that widens the space where aroma collects. People use it for teas they are tasting attentively rather than for everyday desk mugs, and the double wall keeps the outside comfortable to hold. It costs $17.99. It is hand wash only, since a dishwasher can trap water between the glass layers, and because each glass is hand-blown, size and shape vary slightly.
