Labradorite is grey until it is not. Tilt it a few degrees and the whole surface goes blue, or gold, or green — an optical effect called labradorescence, caused by light bouncing off internal layers rather than by any pigment in the stone.

A freeform is cut to follow the flash rather than to a set shape, which is why no two look alike. These come from Madagascar, polished all over, in assorted sizes and shapes.

How to use it

Position it where people walk past rather than where they sit. Labradorescence only appears at certain angles, so movement is what brings the stone to life.

A directional lamp beats overhead lighting every time. Aim, then adjust the stone a few degrees until the flash lands.

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Labradorite is a feldspar and cleaves along flat planes, so avoid knocks and drops.
