The Seal of Solomon is the interlocking hexagram that runs through medieval Islamic and Jewish mysticism and, later, Western occultism. In the legend it is the signet ring by which Solomon commanded spirits; it is also the direct predecessor of the Star of David.

As a magical figure it reads two ways at once. It is a protective seal — a closed, symmetrical shape with no opening — and it is a diagram of the four elements, two triangles interlocked, fire and water, air and earth. Both readings are why it turns up in protection work and in work concerned with spiritual authority.
