Mercury Retrograde 2027: All Three Dates, Signs and Shadow Periods

Brass astrolabe disc engraved with orbital rings, a small polished sphere resting on one track, against a dark green wall

Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027 — in February, June and October. This page gives you every date in American time, the shadow weeks on either side, and the one pattern that makes 2027 different from the year before it.

Quick answer

Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027: February 9 to March 3 (Pisces back into Aquarius), June 10 to July 4 (Cancer back into Gemini), and October 7 to October 28 (Scorpio back into Libra) - 65 retrograde days in total. All three begin in a water sign and end in an air sign. Venus does not go retrograde at all in 2027.

Evidence
Verified

Mercury stations retrograde on 9 February, 10 June and 7 October 2027 and direct on 3 March, 4 July and 28 October 2027.

Source/tradition: Published 2027 ephemeris tables; station dates and degrees cross-checked between Void of Course Moon 2027 retrograde calendar and Astro-Seek 2027 Mercury retrograde calendar, agreeing to the minute of arc.

Verified

All three 2027 Mercury retrogrades begin in a water sign and end in an air sign: Pisces into Aquarius, Cancer into Gemini, Scorpio into Libra.

Source/tradition: Follows directly from the station degrees above; verified sign by sign.

Verified

Venus has no retrograde period in 2027; Mars is retrograde 10 January to 1 April 2027.

Source/tradition: 2027 planetary retrograde tables, Void of Course Moon; Venus synodic cycle places its retrogrades in 2026 and 2028.

Verified

Mercury does not physically reverse direction; the apparent retrograde is a perspective effect of differing orbital speeds.

Source/tradition: Standard positional astronomy; orbital periods per NASA planetary fact sheets.

Traditional

The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first crosses the degree at which it will later station direct, and the post-shadow ends when it re-crosses the degree at which it stationed retrograde.

Source/tradition: Standard definition in contemporary astrological practice; the shadow concept is modern, not classical.

Lived practice

Using the retrograde weeks for revising, rereading, repairing and finishing rather than starting is common practice among people who keep the cycle.

Source/tradition: Widely repeated convention in current astrological practice; the three-Rs framing is modern and not attributable to a single source.

Not proven

Mercury retrograde causes delays, technology failures, travel problems, miscommunication or bad outcomes for contracts.

Source/tradition: Astrological interpretation. No physical mechanism is established and studies looking for retrograde effects on everyday outcomes have not found them.

VERIFIED = verifiable in scientific or official sources · TRADITIONAL = historically or culturally recorded · LIVED PRACTICE = widely practiced, experiential knowledge · NOT PROVEN = spiritual interpretation, not scientifically established.

Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027: February 9 to March 3 (Pisces back into Aquarius), June 10 to July 4 (Cancer back into Gemini), and October 7 to October 28 (Scorpio back into Libra). That is 65 retrograde days in total. Venus does not go retrograde at all in 2027, which makes it a quieter year than 2026.

The three Mercury retrograde dates in 2027

Every cycle below is listed by the calendar date on which Mercury stations — the day it appears to stop and change direction. Stations that fall close to midnight can land a day earlier or later depending on your time zone, so if you are pinning something to the hour rather than the day, check an ephemeris for your own location.

Second Jun 10 – Jul 4 6°21′ Cancer 27°28′ Gemini 24
Third Oct 7 – Oct 28 4°55′ Scorpio 19°18′ Libra 20

Why all three 2027 retrogrades start in water and end in air

This is the structural signature of the year, and most calendars list the dates without ever pointing it out. Every one of the three 2027 cycles begins in a water sign and backs into an air sign: Pisces into Aquarius, Cancer into Gemini, Scorpio into Libra. Three for three.

Mercury retrogrades cluster in one element for a few years at a time and then shift, because the planet's synodic cycle and the zodiac do not divide evenly. 2027 sits at a hinge: the stations are still in water, but each retrograde is long enough to carry Mercury back over the cusp into the air sign behind it.

In practical terms, if you take the symbolism seriously, each of the three periods has the same shape. It opens in the register of feeling, memory, atmosphere and things half-said, and it closes in the register of facts, wording, systems and what was actually agreed. That is a useful thing to know in advance, because it tells you where each three-week stretch is likely to end up: not in the mood it started in.

When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?

February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4, and October 7 to October 28. If you only want to mark three blocks in a planner and move on, those are the three blocks. The first is 21 days, the second 24, the third 20 — 65 days in total, which is close to the long-run average of roughly 18 to 19 percent of any given year.

How many Mercury retrogrades are there in 2027?

Three. That is the usual number. Mercury goes retrograde three times in most years and four times in a minority of them, because one retrograde cycle takes about 116 days from station to station and 365 does not divide by 116 cleanly. 2027 is a standard three-retrograde year.

The shadow periods: the weeks on either side

The shadow periods are the reason people say a retrograde "started early" or "isn't over yet". They are not a vague feeling — they are defined by degrees, and you can put exact dates on them.

The pre-shadow begins when Mercury, still moving forward, first crosses the degree where it will later station direct. The post-shadow ends when Mercury, moving forward again, finally passes the degree where the retrograde began. Between those two moments Mercury covers the same stretch of zodiac three times: forward, back, forward again.

The complete 2027 shadow cycles
Cycle Pre-shadow Retrograde Post-shadow Full span
Pisces / Aquarius Jan 25 – Feb 9 Feb 9 – Mar 3 Mar 3 – 23 ~8 weeks
Cancer / Gemini May 26 – Jun 10 Jun 10 – Jul 4 Jul 4 – 19 ~8 weeks
Scorpio / Libra Sep 17 – Oct 7 Oct 7 – 28 Oct 28 – Nov 13 ~8 weeks

Counted this way, 2027 has roughly 24 weeks touched by a Mercury cycle in some phase. That number gets quoted in alarmed tones online. It is worth keeping in proportion: the shadow weeks are, by definition, the weeks when Mercury is moving at ordinary speed in a perfectly ordinary part of the sky.

What the retrograde loop actually looks like

Mercury never reverses. What changes is the angle from which we see it, because Earth and Mercury are on different tracks at different speeds. When the faster inner planet overtakes us on the inside, it appears for a few weeks to slide backwards against the fixed stars — the same way a car you are passing on the highway seems to drift rearwards, though it is still going forward.

The apparent retrograde loop of Mercury against the background stars A line traces Mercury moving left to right, then doubling back on itself, then continuing right again, forming a flattened loop. Three points are marked: the pre-shadow crossing, the station retrograde, and the station direct. forward station direct station retrograde pre-shadow crossing forward again
Mercury covers the same stretch of sky three times. The dashed section is the retrograde; the marked degree at the left is crossed once on the way out, once on the way back, and once on the way forward again.

Temple Tip

Put the station dates in your calendar, not the whole three weeks. The two days around a station are when people most often report the classic friction — the misfired message, the appointment nobody wrote down. The middle of a retrograde is usually uneventful. If you are going to be careful for six days a year instead of sixty-five, make it those six.

Which signs are most affected in 2027?

Two answers, and the difference between them matters.

The loose answer is the signs Mercury actually occupies: Pisces and Aquarius in February, Cancer and Gemini in June, Scorpio and Libra in October. Gemini and Virgo get named as well, on the traditional grounds that Mercury rules both.

The precise answer is that a retrograde lands on you personally in whichever house of your own chart holds those degrees. Mercury stationing at 6° Cancer means something different for someone with 6° Cancer on their tenth house cusp than for someone with it buried in the twelfth. If you know your rising sign, the houses are the part worth looking up; the sun-sign version is a broad-brush approximation of it.

Venus is not retrograde in 2027 — and that matters

Venus goes retrograde roughly every 18 months, so most years either have one or sit next to one. 2027 has none at all. The last one ran through Scorpio and Libra in the autumn of 2026 and overlapped that year's October Mercury retrograde directly, which is part of why late 2026 felt crowded to people who track this.

2027 has no such overlap. If you compare the two years, the honest summary is that 2027 is the lighter of the pair for anything to do with relationships, money, taste and value: the planet associated with those areas runs forward all year.

Mars retrograde runs into the first Mercury retrograde

The one genuine collision in 2027 is at the start of the year. Mars is retrograde from January 10 to April 1, moving back from Virgo into Leo — 81 days. The February Mercury retrograde sits inside that window entirely.

So the first ten weeks of 2027 carry two retrogrades at once: the planet of drive and the planet of communication, both apparently reversing. In symbolic terms that is a stretch for revision rather than launch — finishing, correcting and re-deciding rather than starting. It is the part of 2027 worth planning around if you are choosing a date for something you want to push forward hard.

Every planet retrograde in 2027 at a glance

The outer planets are retrograde for months at a time as a matter of routine — Pluto spends nearly half of every year retrograde — so these are best read as background weather rather than events.

How much of 2027 is actually retrograde?

Laid out as a share of the year, the three Mercury cycles are a small slice and the outer planets are most of the picture. This is the chart that tends to defuse the panic.

Days retrograde in 2027, by body

Mercury65 days
Venus0 days
Mars81 days
Saturn137 days
Neptune159 days
Pluto163 days

Bars are scaled to the 365 days of 2027. Mercury, the one everybody worries about, is the second-shortest on the list.

What not to do during Mercury retrograde

The standard advice is not to sign contracts, buy electronics, start new projects or travel. Taken literally for 65 days a year, that is unlivable, and nobody actually lives that way — including most of the people who repeat it.

The version that survives contact with an actual calendar is narrower and more useful:

  • Read before you sign, and read the appendix too. Not "never sign" — sign with the attachments open.
  • Confirm verbal agreements in writing. The recurring complaint in these weeks is two people who each remember a different version of the same conversation.
  • Back things up before the station, not after. Fifteen minutes in advance, once every four months.
  • Build slack into travel. An earlier connection, a printed confirmation, the address written down somewhere that does not need a battery.
  • Wait thirty minutes before sending anything written while angry. This is good advice on any of the other 300 days as well.

And the inversion worth keeping: retrogrades are traditionally considered good for anything with the prefix re-. Revising, rereading, reconnecting, repairing, returning to a half-finished thing. If you want to use the three weeks rather than survive them, that is the door.

Practically: how to work with this

A method that fits in a normal life, used across all three 2027 cycles:

  1. Two weeks before the station (the pre-shadow), write down what is currently unfinished. You are making a list to come back to, not solving anything.
  2. On the station day, do the boring hygiene: back up, check renewal dates, reread the one document you have been avoiding.
  3. Through the three weeks, pick items off the unfinished list. Retrogrades are widely described as better suited to finishing than starting; whether or not you hold the symbolism, a scheduled prompt to finish things three times a year is a defensible habit on its own.
  4. On the direct station, decide what you are now actually going forward with. Some of the list will have quietly become irrelevant. That is a result.
  5. Through the post-shadow, put the decisions into motion. This is the stretch most calendars ignore and most people find genuinely useful.

If you keep a weekly rhythm rather than marking single dates, the old planetary week gives you a natural hook: Wednesday belongs to Mercury. Our guide to planetary incense and the days of the week lays out where that assignment comes from and how to keep it simply. For the broader question of what the planet is said to govern in the first place, start with what Mercury retrograde actually means.

Which 2027 retrograde will land hardest for you?

Three questions. There is no hidden scoring and nothing is stored — it just points you at the cycle most worth marking.

Where does your year usually go wrong?

1. The thing that trips you up most often is…
2. Your calendar is busiest in…
3. What you most want from a quiet three weeks is…

What people report, and what that is worth

We are not going to put invented names and five-star quotes on this page. What we can describe honestly is the shape of what people write to us and post publicly about these weeks, which is consistent enough to be worth reporting as a pattern.

The most common report is not disaster. It is a specific kind of small friction: the message that went to the wrong thread, the meeting that two people had written down differently, the file that had not been saved. The second most common is the opposite report — that nothing whatsoever happened, and the writer feels slightly foolish for having braced for it.

The third is the interesting one, and it is the reason experienced practitioners keep the cycle at all: that something unfinished came back round. An old conversation resumed, a project someone had abandoned turned out to be the right one, a person reappeared. Whether that is Mercury or simply what happens when you deliberately spend three weeks looking backwards is not a question astrology can settle. The practice is worth something either way.

What we don't promise

  • No causal claim. There is no established physical mechanism by which Mercury's apparent motion affects electronics, travel, contracts or moods, and studies looking for retrograde effects on everyday outcomes have not found them.
  • No protection. Nothing here — no stone, no stick of incense, no timing — prevents a delayed flight or a misunderstanding. Anyone selling you that is selling you something else.
  • No health claims. Nothing on this page is medical, psychological or financial advice.
  • The dates are astronomy; the meanings are tradition. The stations and degrees are calculated and checkable. What they are said to signify is an interpretive tradition, and we present it as one.
  • Times can shift a day. Station dates near midnight fall differently by time zone. If precision matters to you, check an ephemeris for your location.

How 2027 compares with 2026

Three differences are worth carrying over.

First, Venus. 2026 had a Venus retrograde through Scorpio and Libra in the autumn, sitting directly on top of that year's October Mercury retrograde. 2027 has none. For anyone who tracks relationship and money timing, that is the single biggest change between the two years.

Second, the elements. 2026's Mercury cycles ran through a different mix; 2027's are uniformly water-to-air. The year has one consistent shape rather than three unrelated ones.

Third, October repeats. Mercury stations retrograde in early Scorpio in October 2027, as it did in October 2026. If last autumn's cycle is still fresh, the 2027 one will run over comparable ground. Our write-up of the October 2026 retrograde in Scorpio covers that territory in detail, and much of it transfers.

If you are planning the whole of 2027 rather than just the retrogrades, the full moon calendar for 2027 is the companion page to this one, and the Wheel of the Year dates for 2027 give you the eight seasonal markers in US time.

Mercury is not the only planet turning in 2027. Jupiter retrograde 2026–2027 runs from December 12 to April 12 through ten degrees of Leo — four months against Mercury's three weeks, and a useful contrast in how differently the two cycles behave.

Frequently asked questions

When is the first Mercury retrograde of 2027?

February 9, 2027. Mercury stations retrograde at 5°58′ Pisces and moves back into Aquarius, turning direct at 20°55′ Aquarius on March 3. The pre-shadow begins around January 25.

How many days is Mercury retrograde in 2027?

Sixty-five days across three cycles: 21 days in February and March, 24 in June and July, and 20 in October. That is about 18 percent of the year, which is close to the long-run average.

Is Venus retrograde in 2027?

No. Venus does not station retrograde at any point in 2027. Venus retrogrades occur roughly every 18 months, and 2027 falls between two of them.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period in 2027?

There are three, each running about eight weeks in total. Pisces and Aquarius: pre-shadow January 25 to February 9, post-shadow March 3 to 23. Cancer and Gemini: pre-shadow May 26 to June 10, post-shadow July 4 to 19. Scorpio and Libra: pre-shadow September 17 to October 7, post-shadow October 28 to November 13.

Which signs does Mercury retrograde affect in 2027?

Mercury occupies Pisces and Aquarius, Cancer and Gemini, and Scorpio and Libra during the three cycles. Gemini and Virgo are also traditionally named because Mercury rules them. In practice, a retrograde is felt through whichever house of your own chart holds those degrees, which depends on your rising sign rather than your sun sign.

Can you sign a contract during Mercury retrograde?

Yes. Courts, banks and landlords do not consult an ephemeris, and avoiding all contracts for 65 days a year is not realistic. The workable version of the advice is to read the document and its attachments carefully and confirm verbal agreements in writing — which is sound practice in any month.

Is Mercury actually moving backwards?

No. Mercury orbits the Sun in one direction throughout. The apparent reversal is a perspective effect caused by Earth and Mercury moving at different speeds on different orbits, the same way a slower car seems to drift backwards as you pass it.

Which other planets are retrograde in 2027?

Mars from January 10 to April 1, Jupiter until April 13, Pluto from May 8 to October 18, Neptune from July 9 to December 15, Saturn from August 9 to December 24, and Uranus from September 15 into 2028. Venus is the only classical planet with no retrograde in 2027.

Mercury is not the only planet stationing in 2027. Mars turns retrograde on January 10 and stays that way until April 1 — a far rarer cycle, and one that crosses a sign boundary this time. The dates, shadow period and the astronomy behind it are in our guide to Mars retrograde 2027.
