Saturn Retrograde 2027: Dates, Shadow, Meaning and Your House
Saturn turns retrograde on August 9, 2027, at 27°53′ Aries (2:06 p.m. EDT) and direct on December 23 at 21°01′ Aries, 137 days later. Exact times for every US zone, the shadow from May 4, 2027 to March 27, 2028, the house it touches for your rising sign, the Vedic Shani dates and the night Saturn is brightest.
Saturn turns retrograde on August 9, 2027, at almost 28 degrees of Aries, and stations direct just before Christmas. It is the last full Saturn retrograde in Aries for about 29 years, and the one that finishes the job Saturn started when it entered the sign in 2026. Here are the exact US times, the shadow dates, which house it touches for your rising sign, how the Vedic calendar reads the same months, and what to actually do with them.

When is Saturn retrograde in 2027?
Saturn retrograde 2027 starts on Monday, August 9, 2027, at 18:06 UTC and ends on Friday, December 24, 2027, at 02:46 UTC. In the United States the end falls on the evening of December 23, because UTC is already past midnight. Saturn stations retrograde at 27°53′ Aries and stations direct at 21°01′ Aries, so it walks back just under seven degrees over 137 days. It does not leave Aries at any point.
We calculated these times ourselves with the NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris and compared them against published astrology calendars: Café Astrology gives the same station, 27°53′ Aries at 2:06 p.m. EDT, and the same shadow degrees. Most short listings online give only the day, and a few contradict themselves between headline and body, so the table below is the version to keep.

In Alaska, the retrograde station is at 10:06 a.m. AKDT on August 9 and the direct station at 5:46 p.m. AKST on December 23; in Hawaii, 8:06 a.m. and 4:46 p.m. HST. Arizona outside the Navajo Nation stays on MST all year, so use the Mountain column for December and the Pacific column for summer.
What is the Saturn retrograde shadow period in 2027?
The shadow period is the stretch of sky Saturn covers three times. It begins on May 4, 2027, when Saturn first reaches 21°01′ Aries, the degree where it will later turn direct. It ends on March 27, 2028, when Saturn finally gets past 27°53′ Aries, the degree where it turned retrograde. Between those dates Saturn crosses the same seven degrees forward, backward and forward again.
Astrologers who use shadows read the pre-shadow, May 4 to August 9, as the period when the themes of the retrograde first show up, often as a situation you do not yet have the full picture of. The post-shadow, December 23 to March 27, 2028, is when the matter gets settled for good. Saturn then leaves Aries a little over two weeks later, on the evening of April 12, 2028, US time (03:40 UTC on April 13), and enters Taurus. That timing gives the 2027 retrograde a clear "final exam" character in the traditional reading: it is the last time Saturn reviews Aries territory before moving on for decades.
Saturn's 2027 to 2028 path in four stages
- Forward through new ground (January 1 to May 4, 2027): Saturn moves from 8° to 21° Aries for the first time.
- Pre-shadow (May 4 to August 9): Saturn crosses 21° to 28° Aries, the stretch it will revisit.
- Retrograde (August 9 to December 23): Saturn backs up from 28° to 21° Aries.
- Post-shadow (December 23 to March 27, 2028): Saturn crosses 21° to 28° Aries a third time, then enters Taurus on the evening of April 12, 2028 (US time).
Why does Saturn go retrograde at all?
Nothing in the solar system reverses. Saturn keeps orbiting the Sun in the same direction at about 9.7 kilometers per second. What changes is our point of view: Earth, on its much faster inner orbit, catches up with Saturn and overtakes it once a year, roughly every 378 days. For a few months around that pass, Saturn appears to drift backwards against the background stars, the same way a slower car seems to slide backwards when you pass it on the highway.
That geometry has a visible consequence. The middle of every outer-planet retrograde is opposition, the moment Earth sits directly between the Sun and the planet. In 2027 that is October 17, at 8:36 p.m. EDT. Saturn is then about 8.3 astronomical units away, roughly 1.25 billion kilometers, the closest it gets all year, and it is up all night: it rises between about 6:10 and 6:25 p.m. local time across the lower 48 and sets around 7 a.m. Saturn spends about 36 percent of every year retrograde; 2027 is no exception.
Every retrograde of 2027 on one line (January to December)
The chart also shows why 2027 feels busy to anyone following transits. From August 9 to mid-December, Saturn, Neptune and, until October 18, Pluto are all retrograde at the same time, and Uranus joins on September 15. Mercury adds a short loop from October 7 to 28. Our Mercury retrograde 2027 and Mars retrograde 2027 guides cover the faster planets.
What does Saturn retrograde in Aries mean?
In traditional astrology, Saturn is the planet of structure, time, limits, duty and consequence. Aries is the sign of initiative, independence and the first move. The combination is famously uncomfortable: Saturn sits in its fall in Aries, the sign where its slow, careful nature is considered least at home. Astrologers describe Saturn in Aries as the period when you learn to lead yourself, to start things with discipline rather than impulse, and to accept responsibility for what you began.
The retrograde adds review to that picture. In the usual interpretation it is not a time for new commitments but for checking the ones you made since Saturn entered Aries in 2026: Did you start what you said you would start? Is the structure under a new project, job or relationship actually holding? Where did you act alone when you needed help, or wait for permission when you needed to act? Astrologers stress that a Saturn retrograde rarely feels dramatic. It tends to show up as delays, second drafts, unglamorous paperwork and the sense of redoing something properly.
2027 has one feature the 2026 retrograde did not: Saturn retrogrades over 28° to 21° Aries, the last third of the sign, which by long-standing convention is read as completion and consolidation rather than beginnings. If 2026 was the year you started, the traditional reading of 2027 is the year you finish the foundation. Our Saturn retrograde 2026 guide covers the first half of the cycle.

Which house does Saturn retrograde 2027 affect for your rising sign?
Astrologers usually locate a transit by house, and the house depends on your rising sign, not your sun sign. With whole sign houses, the simplest system, the whole of Aries falls in one house, so the table below works without a birth time beyond knowing your ascendant. If you do not know your rising sign, our guide on how to find your rising sign walks you through it.
| Rising sign | House | Area of life it traditionally touches |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1st | body, self-image, how you present yourself |
| Taurus | 12th | rest, retreat, what you keep hidden, endings |
| Gemini | 11th | friends, groups, long-range goals |
| Cancer | 10th | career, reputation, public role |
| Leo | 9th | study, travel, beliefs, publishing |
| Virgo | 8th | shared money, debt, intimacy, inheritance |
| Libra | 7th | partners, contracts, open rivals |
| Scorpio | 6th | daily work, routines, health habits |
| Sagittarius | 5th | creativity, romance, children, play |
| Capricorn | 4th | home, family, roots, property |
| Aquarius | 3rd | siblings, neighbors, writing, short trips |
| Pisces | 2nd | income, possessions, self-worth |
With Placidus or other quadrant houses, late Aries can fall in the next house along, especially at northern latitudes, so check your own chart if you use those systems. And if you have a planet or angle between 21° and 28° of Aries, Libra, Cancer or Capricorn, astrologers would say this retrograde touches you more directly: Saturn crosses that degree three times between May 2027 and March 2028.
How does Vedic astrology see Saturn in 2027?
If you have been searching for "Shani transit 2027", you will have noticed different sign names. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which in 2027 sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac most Western astrologers use (Lahiri ayanamsa). The same sky therefore gets different labels:
| Date | Western (tropical) | Vedic (sidereal) |
|---|---|---|
| June 3, 2027 | Saturn at 24° Aries, direct | Saturn enters Mesha (Aries) |
| August 9, 2027 | Stations retrograde, 28° Aries | Stations retrograde, about 4° Mesha |
| October 20, 2027 | Retrograde, 24° Aries | Retrograde back into Meena (Pisces) |
| December 23–24, 2027 | Stations direct, 21° Aries | Stations direct, about 27° Meena |
| February 23, 2028 | Direct, 24° Aries | Enters Mesha again and stays |
Our sidereal dates agree with the Indian Panchang calendars we checked. Neither system is "the correct sky": the planet is where it is, and the zodiacs are two conventions for naming that position. If you follow Western astrology, Saturn is in Aries all year. If you follow Jyotish, the important event is Shani moving into Mesha in June and briefly back into Meena during the retrograde.
What should you not do during Saturn retrograde?
Astrologers are much less alarmist about Saturn retrograde than about Mercury retrograde, and the traditional advice is better described as "what to slow down on" than as a list of bans. The usual recommendations are not to start a large, long-term commitment on impulse in the weeks around the August 9 station, not to abandon a structure just because it is getting hard, and not to skip the boring part, since Saturn is the planet of exactly that.
| Good timing for | Usually advised against | Why, in the traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Finishing a project you started in 2026 | Launching a ten-year plan on August 9 | station days are read as unsettled |
| Renegotiating terms, fixing contracts | Signing in a hurry to escape pressure | Saturn rewards patience, punishes shortcuts |
| Revisiting a skill you dropped | Starting three new courses at once | review over expansion |
| Paying down debt, sorting records | Large speculative risks | Saturn rules limits and consequences |
| Ending what no longer holds | Ending something only because it is slow | slow is not the same as broken |
None of this is a reason to cancel ordinary life. People sign leases, marry and change jobs during Saturn retrograde every year, because a third of every year is Saturn retrograde. If a decision is sound on the facts, the astrological reading is at most a prompt to check the structure twice.
Temple Tip
Write down, on August 9, the one thing you started since spring 2026 that you most want to still be standing in 2029. Put the note away and read it again on December 23. Saturn retrograde is easier to use when it has one target instead of your whole life.
Can you see Saturn during the 2027 retrograde?
Yes, and the retrograde is the best time of year to look. Saturn is retrograde precisely when it is closest to Earth and visible for most of the night. Around opposition on October 17 it shines at roughly magnitude zero to +0.5, a steady pale-yellow point in the east after sunset, brighter than all but a handful of stars, in the faint constellation Pisces. It does not twinkle the way stars do, which is the easiest way to pick it out.
Any small telescope magnifying 30 times or more shows the rings. In 2027 they are opening again after the edge-on view of March 2025, so they appear as a narrow ellipse rather than the wide ring of photographs. Neptune sits about 17 to 21 degrees west of Saturn all autumn, far too faint for the naked eye. If you want to mark the retrograde with something you can actually see, step outside on the night of October 17 and find Saturn rising in the east around sunset.

Voices from practice: what people report
We do not publish invented testimonials. These are patterns that recur in public astrology forums and social media discussion of Saturn retrogrades, given as patterns and without names.
The most frequent report is that Saturn retrogrades are quieter than expected: people describe them in hindsight as the months when a delayed project finally got its paperwork, or when an old obligation came back to be closed properly. A second recurring theme is fatigue around the stations, especially the retrograde station, which people following transits describe as a few heavy days rather than a dramatic event. A third pattern comes from people with planets in late Aries or the other cardinal signs: they tend to report the shadow period, not the retrograde itself, as the time when things moved.
Skeptical voices are common too, and worth listening to. Many people point out that the effects described for Saturn retrograde, delays and responsibility, are also simply a description of adult life in the second half of any year.
What we don't promise
The dates, times, degrees and the opposition and visibility figures on this page are astronomy: they come from our own calculation with the NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris and match published calendars within a minute. The meanings of Saturn, Aries, houses and shadows are astrological tradition. No physical influence of planetary positions on individual lives has been demonstrated in controlled studies, and we do not claim that Saturn retrograde causes delays, ends relationships or tests anyone. If the review it prompts is useful to you, that is the value. If a decision is serious, base it on the facts, and on professional advice where it is a legal, medical or financial matter.
Practically: how to work with Saturn retrograde 2027
A simple plan for the 137 days
- May 4 (shadow begins): name the one structure you want to secure by spring 2028. Write it down.
- August 9 (station retrograde): no new big commitments for two or three days. Light a candle, review the list, mark solid and shaky.
- October 17 (opposition): the midpoint. Go outside, find Saturn in the east, and ask what the past ten weeks have shown you.
- December 23 (station direct): decide what you are keeping, fixing or ending. It falls two days after the winter solstice, a natural moment for that.
- March 27, 2028 (shadow ends): check the note from May. Saturn moves into Taurus on the evening of April 12, 2028.
For the December dates, our winter solstice rituals pair naturally with the direct station. If Saturn is a big theme in your chart right now, read our guide to the Saturn return: anyone born between roughly spring 1996 and early 1999, or between 1967 and 1969, has Saturn returning to its birth position in Aries in these years. Candles and incense for planetary days are in our planetary magic collection and our oil candles.
