Mars Retrograde 2027: Dates, the Shadow Period, and What Actually Happens

Mars as a rust-red globe with a bright white polar cap and a long dark canyon running across its middle against a dark sky

Mars turns retrograde on January 10, 2027 and does not turn direct again until April 1. It is the longest and least frequent of the personal-planet retrogrades, it happens only once every twenty-six months, and in 2027 it does something it does not do every cycle: it backs across a sign boundary. Here are the exact dates, the shadow period either side, and what is physically going on.

Quick answer

Mars is retrograde from January 10, 2027 (7:59 AM Eastern, at 10 degrees 25 minutes Virgo) to April 1, 2027 (10:08 AM Eastern, at 20 degrees 55 minutes Leo), a span of 81 days. The full shadow period runs from November 5, 2026 to June 7, 2027. The next Mars retrograde after this one is not until 2029.

Quick answer: Mars is retrograde from January 10, 2027 (7:59 AM Eastern, at 10°25′ Virgo) to April 1, 2027 (10:08 AM Eastern, at 20°55′ Leo) — 81 days. The full shadow period runs from November 5, 2026 to June 7, 2027. The next one after this is not until 2029.

Mars retrograde 2027 dates

Four dates matter, not two. The stations are when Mars appears to stop and reverse; the shadow boundaries are when it first and last touches the same stretch of zodiac, which is the part most calendars leave out.

We computed these from the JPL DE421 ephemeris and checked the two stations against Cafe Astrology's published table, which gives January 10, 2027 at 7:59 AM and April 1 at 10:08 AM — matching to the minute. The one-arcminute difference in the retrograde degree (10°25′ against their 10 Virgo 26) is rounding, not disagreement.

What the shadow period actually is

The retrograde loop covers a specific stretch of zodiac — here, 19.5 degrees between 20°55′ Leo and 10°25′ Virgo. Mars crosses that stretch three times: forwards before the station, backwards during the retrograde, forwards again afterwards.

The shadow is the first and third pass. It is not a separate astrological event with its own mechanism; it is simply the rest of the ground Mars re-covers. That is why it gets attention — whatever falls in that zodiacal band gets visited three times across 214 days instead of once across a few weeks.

The three passes over 20°55′ Leo – 10°25′ Virgo

Pass 1 — forwards · Nov 5, 2026 to Jan 10, 2027 · 66 days
Pass 2 — backwards · Jan 10 to Apr 1, 2027 · 81 days
Pass 3 — forwards · Apr 1 to Jun 7, 2027 · 67 days

214 days in total. The retrograde itself is barely more than a third of it.

Why Mars appears to move backwards

Mars never reverses. Nothing in the solar system does. What changes is our viewing angle, because Earth is on a faster inside lane and periodically overtakes Mars the way a fast car passes a slower one — and for a while the slower car appears to slide backwards against the scenery behind it.

Earth takes 365 days to orbit the Sun; Mars takes 687. Earth catches up and laps Mars every 779.9 days, or about 25.6 months. That is the whole cycle, and it is why Mars retrograde is rare compared with Mercury's three or four a year.

Mars traces a loop or zigzag against the background stars. The two marked points are the stations — the moments the apparent motion reverses. Whether it draws a loop or an S depends on how far Mars sits from the ecliptic at the time.

The retrograde is centred on opposition

This is the part astrology and astronomy agree on completely, and it is the cleanest way to understand what a Mars retrograde is: the retrograde brackets the moment Earth passes directly between Mars and the Sun.

Opposition falls on February 19, 2027, at 10:50 AM Eastern — almost exactly the midpoint of the retrograde. That is the night Mars is closest, brightest, and visible all night, rising as the Sun sets. If you want to actually look at the thing everyone is writing about, that is the week.

Temple Tip

Go outside on a clear night in the week around February 19 and find it. Mars is the distinctly orange one, and at opposition it is up all night. Whatever you make of the astrology, standing in the cold looking at the actual planet does more for a Mars working than any amount of reading about it.

Why the 2027 Mars is unusually small

Here is something the astrology write-ups will not tell you, and it changes what this particular retrograde looks like: the 2027 opposition is one of the worst of the century for viewing.

Mars has a noticeably eccentric orbit. When opposition catches it near perihelion — its closest point to the Sun — Mars can swell to over 25 arcseconds across. When opposition catches it near aphelion, it stays small. The 2027 apparition is aphelic: at closest approach Mars reaches just 13.8 arcseconds, at a distance of 0.6779 AU, about 101.4 million kilometres or 63 million miles.

Apparent diameter of Mars at opposition

Perihelic opposition (best case, e.g. 2003) — 25.1″
2025 opposition — 14.6″
2027 opposition — 13.8″ (aphelic)

Figures from the ALPO Mars Section apparition summary. 2027 is close to the smallest an opposition Mars can be.

It is worth knowing if you plan to point a telescope at it: surface detail will be hard, and this is not the year for it. It also makes a neat point about the astrology. The symbolic weight assigned to a Mars retrograde does not vary with how big Mars looks, and nobody claims it should — which tells you the tradition is working from the geometry of the cycle, not from the planet's brightness.

Mars retrograde in Virgo and Leo

Most Mars retrogrades stay in one sign. This one does not: Mars stations at 10°25′ Virgo, backs up through the whole early stretch of Virgo, crosses the boundary on February 21, and finishes its reverse at 20°55′ Leo.

So the cycle covers two quite different registers in the tradition. Virgo-Mars is read as effort applied to detail, method, health routines, the craft of a thing. Leo-Mars is read as effort applied to self-expression, visibility, performance, pride in the work. Practitioners who track this sort of thing tend to describe the second half as the more exposed one, because Mars is retracing ground in the sign it is louder in.

If you want to know what that lands on in your own chart, it is the house or houses spanning late Leo to early Virgo. Our guide to what your Mars sign means covers how natal Mars is read in the first place, which is the more useful starting point than the transit.

How long is Mars retrograde, and how often?

Mars is the outlier among the personal planets: the rarest retrograde and one of the longest.

Planet How often Roughly how long
Mercury 3–4 times a year about 3 weeks
Venus every 18 months about 6 weeks
Mars every 25–26 months 8–11 weeks (2027: 81 days)
Jupiter once a year about 4 months
Saturn once a year about 4½ months

Because Mars comes round only every twenty-six months, its retrograde tends to land on a genuinely different chapter of life each time — which is part of why it is treated with more weight than the Mercury cycles people joke about. We keep separate date pages for Mercury retrograde 2027, Venus retrograde 2026, Saturn retrograde 2026, Uranus retrograde 2026 and Chiron retrograde 2026.

What the tradition says happens during Mars retrograde

Mars governs drive, assertion, anger, desire, and the capacity to start things and push them through. When it is retrograde, the conventional reading is that all of that turns inward rather than disappearing.

The themes astrologers consistently name: stalled momentum on projects that had been moving; anger that is felt but not expressed, or expressed later and sideways; a return of conflicts you thought were finished; second thoughts about something you committed to in the preceding weeks; and physical energy that feels lower or harder to direct.

None of that is a prediction. It is the symbolic vocabulary attached to a cycle, and its usefulness is as a frame for noticing, not a forecast of events.

Is Mars retrograde bad?

No — and the framing is the problem. Retrogrades are ordinary orbital geometry that happens on a fixed schedule, visible from here and nowhere else. Mars has been doing this every twenty-six months for four and a half billion years.

Where the tradition is genuinely useful is as a changed emphasis: a stretch better suited to revision than initiation. Where it stops being useful is when it becomes a reason not to act. Eighty-one days is a long time to put your life on hold, and nobody serious in the tradition recommends it.

What people traditionally hold off on

Offered as the conventional advice, not as instruction:

  • Launching something that needs sustained aggression — a confrontation, a competitive bid, a campaign. The tradition says start it in the shadow's wake instead.
  • Elective surgery, in older texts. Take this as historical astrological convention. Medical decisions belong with your doctor and nowhere else.
  • Picking the fight you have been circling. The usual counsel is that retrograde Mars arguments reopen rather than resolve.
  • Buying tools, weapons, vehicles — Mars-ruled purchases, in traditional electional practice.

And what it is considered good for: finishing what is already started, re-training, repairing, going back to an abandoned project, and physical practice that rebuilds rather than tests. On choosing the moment for a working more generally, see how to pick the timing for a working.

Voices from practice

We do not print invented testimonials, so instead: what the historical record shows about how Mars was handled.

Mars has carried iron since antiquity — in the classical planetary metals, iron is Mars's metal, which is why iron nails, blades and filings turn up in protective and aggressive workings across centuries of European magical practice. The weekday carries the same logic: Tuesday is Old English Tíwesdæg, the day of Tíw, the Germanic god matched to Mars, which is why Romance languages call it mardi and martes outright. That correspondence — planet, metal, day — is the practical skeleton beneath most Mars work, and it is set out in full in our piece on the seven planetary metals and their weekdays.

Traditional electional astrologers, meanwhile, treated a retrograde planet as debilitated for initiating anything under its rulership — a technical judgement in the charts, centuries before retrogrades became a general-purpose explanation for a bad week.

Where does the 2027 Mars retrograde actually land for you?

Three questions, on the practical question rather than the cosmic one: what should you do about the eighty-one days.

1. Is there something Mars-flavoured you have been putting off?
2. When would you want to act on it?
3. How do you use astrology?

Practically: how to work with this

  • Before November 5, 2026: If something Mars-flavoured needs launching — a confrontation, a competitive push, a hard training block — the tradition says get it started before the shadow opens.
  • November 5 to January 10: First pass. Note what starts in this window; these are the threads the retrograde will pull on.
  • January 10 to April 1: The retrograde itself. Revise, repair, retrain, finish. A weekly Tuesday marker beats one big ritual.
  • Around February 19: Opposition. Go and look at it.
  • February 21 onward: Mars is back in Leo. The reading shifts from method to visibility.
  • April 1 to June 7: Third pass, forwards. The conventional advice is that this is where the retrograde's revisions actually get implemented — not at the station.

If you are planning the whole year, the 2027 eclipses and the 2027 full moon calendar cover what else this stretch runs into — and note that the February 2027 eclipse season overlaps the middle of this retrograde.

What we don't promise

  • Mars retrograde causes nothing. Retrograde motion is an apparent effect of Earth's viewing angle. There is no known physical mechanism by which it acts on human affairs, and no controlled evidence that it does.
  • Nothing here is medical advice. The traditional caution about surgery is reported as historical astrological convention. Do not schedule or postpone a medical procedure on astrological grounds.
  • We are not forecasting your year. The themes listed are the tradition's vocabulary, not predictions about you.
  • The dates are astronomy; the meanings are tradition. The stations, shadow boundaries, opposition and distance are computed and independently verified. Everything about drive, anger and timing is inherited symbolic convention, and we have kept the two visibly apart.
  • No product changes a transit. Incense, candles and stones are tools for attention and ritual structure. That is all we claim for them.

Two outer-planet retrogrades overlap in early 2027. Jupiter retrograde 2026–2027 is already under way by the time Mars turns, with its own station degrees, shadow period and a February opposition worth going outside for.

Frequently asked

When is Mars retrograde in 2027?

Mars is retrograde from January 10, 2027 at 7:59 AM Eastern, at 10 degrees 25 minutes of Virgo, until April 1, 2027 at 10:08 AM Eastern, at 20 degrees 55 minutes of Leo. That is 81 days.

What is the Mars retrograde 2027 shadow period?

The pre-retrograde shadow begins on November 5, 2026, when Mars first reaches 20 degrees 55 minutes of Leo. The post-retrograde shadow ends on June 7, 2027, when Mars returns to 10 degrees 25 minutes of Virgo. The full span is 214 days.

What signs is Mars retrograde in during 2027?

Both Virgo and Leo. Mars stations retrograde in early Virgo, backs across the sign boundary into Leo on February 21, 2027, and stations direct in late Leo. Most Mars retrogrades stay within a single sign, so this one is less common.

Why does Mars appear to go backwards?

Mars does not reverse. Earth orbits the Sun in 365 days and Mars in 687, so Earth periodically overtakes it on the inside. During the overtaking, Mars appears to slide backwards against the background stars, the same way a slower car appears to move backwards as you pass it. Earth laps Mars every 779.9 days.

Is Mars retrograde bad?

No. It is ordinary orbital geometry that recurs every 25 to 26 months. Astrological tradition treats it as a period better suited to revising and finishing than to launching, but it is not an omen and it causes nothing. Treating 81 days as a reason not to act is not what the tradition recommends either.

When is the next Mars retrograde after 2027?

Mars retrogrades roughly every 25 to 26 months, so the next cycle after the January to April 2027 retrograde falls in 2029. It is the least frequent of the personal-planet retrogrades.

When is Mars closest to Earth in 2027?

Opposition falls on February 19, 2027, with closest approach the following day at 0.6779 astronomical units, about 101.4 million kilometres or 63 million miles. Mars reaches an apparent diameter of 13.8 arcseconds, which is close to the smallest possible at opposition because 2027 is an aphelic apparition.
