Ground lapis produced ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in Renaissance painting — more costly by weight than gold, which is why it was reserved for the Virgin's robes. Michelangelo, Vermeer and Raphael all used it. The finest lapis still comes from the Badakhshan mines in Afghanistan, the same source that supplied those studios and, six thousand years ago, ancient Egypt.
