At a glance
- 4-inch lavender bundle
-
Softer and gentler than a sage clearing
-
Traditionally burned for calm and for meditation
-
Also used to cleanse crystals in the smoke
-
Reusable across many sessions when extinguished properly and stored dry
How to use it
-
Light the end with the fewest stems — not the leafy end — let it flame, then blow it out so it smolders.
-
Hold it over a heat-proof dish the whole time. An abalone or lion's paw shell is traditional; any ceramic bowl works.
-
Waft the smoke through the space, using a feather if you have one, or set the bundle down on the dish and let it work.
-
To cleanse stones and jewelry, hold them steadily in the smoke until it flows in a straight stream upward after circling the piece.
-
Extinguish it completely by pressing the lit end into the dish, then store it dry. One bundle lasts many sessions.

✨ Temple Tip — lavender is a finisher, not an opener
Most people light one herb and expect it to do everything. Lavender is better used second — after sage has done the sharp work, as the thing that fills the room afterward. Kept in that order, a single lavender bundle lasts months, because you are only ever burning a little of it at a time.
Questions we get asked
How big is the bundle?
Approximately 4 inches.
How is it different from sage?
Sage clears sharply; lavender is the gentler, calming counterpart. Many people burn sage first and lavender after.
Can I use it to cleanse crystals?
Yes — let the smoke swirl gently around them.
Which end do I light?
The end with the fewest stems.
Is it safe around pets or asthma?
We would not burn it around birds, asthma, or small children. Smoke is a respiratory irritant.
Care & safety: Never leave a smoldering bundle unattended, and make sure it is completely out before you leave the area. Burn over a heat-proof dish and carry the dish with you. Keep out of reach of children and animals and away from anything flammable. Ventilate during and after — smoke is a respiratory irritant regardless of what is burning, and it is not suitable around asthma, small children, or birds. A ritual tool, not a medical or healthcare product; no health claim is made. We recommend consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication. Light it late, ventilate, and let the room go quiet. #TempleOfDesire
