Snake rings solved the sizing problem centuries before anyone called it a design decision: the body coils, so the ring adjusts. This one does exactly that, in 925 sterling silver.

The symbolism came with it. Because snakes shed their skin, many cultures read them as fertility, rebirth, renewal and immortality. In ancient Rome the snake was associated with Asclepius, and in Victorian jewellery a serpent band was worn to mean eternal love and good fortune.

How to use it

Adjustable bands last for years if you resize them rarely and gently.

  1. Open the band with slow, even pressure using both hands — never lever it against a hard surface.
  2. Slide it onto the finger, then close it to a comfortable fit rather than a tight one.
  3. Resize as seldom as possible; repeated bending is what fatigues silver.
  4. Remove it before washing up, swimming or applying hand cream.
  5. Polish with a silver cloth when it dulls and store it in a dry, closed box.

Sterling darkens fastest in humid air. Keeping the ring in a small closed box with the lid actually shut does more for it than any amount of polishing.
