A stockier piece than most watermelon tourmaline on the market — 2.25 inches long but half an inch across in both directions, which gives it enough body to stand up on a stand instead of needing to lie flat. Thirty-six grams of Brazilian elbaite with the characteristic pink-in-green zoning.

The trade name comes from the cross-section, but the colour runs along the crystal too, and in a piece with this much cross-sectional area the transition between the pink interior and the green shell is unusually easy to read without a loupe.

At a glance

  • Natural watermelon tourmaline — bicolor elbaite
  • 0.5" x 0.5" x 2.25"
  • 36 g — heavier and blockier than the average specimen
  • From Brazil
  • Ships within 3 business days

How to use it

Set it upright if you can, termination facing out. The end face is where the pink core and green rim resolve into the concentric pattern the stone is named for, and standing the crystal makes that face part of the display rather than something you have to pick the piece up to see.

Indirect light from behind or to the side does more than a spotlight. Tourmaline reads best when light passes partway through the crystal — a hard front light flattens both colours toward grey.

✨ Temple Tip

If you own more than one tourmaline, display them at different angles rather than in a row. The colour in these crystals is directional — two identical specimens turned the same way look like a repeat, turned differently they look like two stones.

Questions we get asked

How does this compare to the 24 g specimen?

This one is shorter but noticeably thicker — 0.5 inches square in section against 0.75 by 0.25. In practice that means more visible cross-section and a crystal that stands more readily on its own.

Is this the exact piece I will receive?

Yes. It is individually listed and individually measured.

What exactly is watermelon tourmaline?

Elbaite tourmaline with concentric colour zoning — a pink core and a green outer layer, formed as the chemistry of the pocket changed during growth.

Can it be worn or set into jewellery?

Tourmaline is used in jewellery, but this is listed as a mineral specimen, not as a cut stone. Setting it would mean cutting it, which would destroy the specimen.

Any special handling?

Avoid impact and ultrasonic cleaning. A soft dry brush for dust is all it needs.

Blocky, bicolor, and content to stand where you put it.

In short

This Watermelon Tourmaline Crystal is a Brazilian bicolor elbaite specimen sold by Rare Earth Gallery. At 0.5 x 0.5 x 2.25 inches and 36 grams it is stockier than most watermelon tourmaline, with enough cross-sectional area that the pink core inside the green shell is readable without a loupe. The extra body lets it be stood upright with the termination facing out instead of lying flat. It is priced at $1,961.95 and sold individually. It is a natural, uncut crystal, so the surfaces and colour boundary are as they grew rather than shaped or polished.
