Spring Equinox 2027: Exact Times, Ostara Rituals and the Equal-Day Myth

Spring altar at a bright window with daffodils, tulips and hyacinths, a moss nest holding speckled eggs, bowls of seeds and beeswax candles

The spring equinox 2027 falls on Saturday, March 20. Nearly every page you will read says it is the day of equal day and night — and in the United States that is wrong by about eight minutes. Here are the exact times in your own zone, what is genuinely old about Ostara, and what was invented in the 1800s.

Quick answer

The spring equinox 2027 happens on Saturday, March 20 at 4:24 pm Eastern (1:24 pm Pacific, 20:24 UTC). It is the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator and enters Aries. Pagans call the season Ostara. Day and night are not actually equal on this date — that happened days earlier.

Quick answer: The spring equinox 2027 happens on Saturday, March 20 at 4:24 pm Eastern (1:24 pm Pacific, 20:24 UTC). It is the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator and enters Aries. Pagans call the season Ostara. Day and night are not actually equal on this date — that happened days earlier.

When is the spring equinox 2027?

The March equinox 2027 occurs at a single instant worldwide, which lands on different clock times depending where you are:

March equinox, calculated from the JPL DE421 ephemeris.
Year UTC Eastern Pacific
2026 Mar 20, 14:45 Mar 20, 10:45 am Mar 20, 7:45 am
2027 Mar 20, 20:24 Mar 20, 4:24 pm Mar 20, 1:24 pm
2028 Mar 20, 02:17 Mar 19, 10:17 pm Mar 19, 7:17 pm
2029 Mar 20, 08:01 Mar 20, 4:01 am Mar 20, 1:01 am
2030 Mar 20, 13:52 Mar 20, 9:52 am Mar 20, 6:52 am

Look at 2028. The equinox is on March 20 in UTC — and on March 19 across the entire United States. Spring will start a day earlier than almost every calendar you own will print, because those calendars quietly report UTC without saying so. Worth knowing two years in advance if you plan anything around the date.

Is the spring equinox really equal day and night?

No. This is the most repeated claim about the equinox and it does not survive contact with a sunrise table.

"Equinox" does mean equal night, and the geometry behind the name is real: the Sun crosses the celestial equator, so its centre is above the horizon for twelve hours. But we do not measure daylight from the centre of the Sun. Sunrise is counted from the moment the upper edge appears, and sunset from the moment it disappears — and the atmosphere refracts light over the horizon, lifting the Sun into view before it has geometrically risen. Both effects add daylight at each end.

So on the equinox itself, day already beats night. We calculated the real figures:

Daylight on March 20, 2027, and the date when day and night are genuinely equal (the equilux).
City Daylight on the equinox Longer than night by Real equal day/night
New York 12 h 08 m 8 min March 17
Chicago 12 h 08 m 8 min March 17
Los Angeles 12 h 08 m 8 min March 16
Miami 12 h 07 m 7 min March 15

Two things fall out of that table. The equinox is not the balance point — it is already past it. And the true balance point depends on your latitude: the further south you live, the earlier it happened. Miami reaches it five days before the equinox, New York three.

If your practice is built on the image of perfect balance, the honest version is that balance is a few days behind you by the time the calendar says equinox, and the day you are actually standing in is one where the light has already won. That is arguably a better thing to mark.

What is Ostara, and how old is the name?

Ostara is the name most modern pagans use for the spring equinox festival. The name is real; its history is shorter and stranger than most articles admit.

The single ancient source is Bede, writing in The Reckoning of Time in 725. In the chapter on the English months he says April was called Eosturmonath, after a goddess Eostre, in whose honour the pagan English held feasts. That is the entire testimony. One sentence, one author, one goddess, one month — and the month is April, not March.

In 1835 Jacob Grimm, in Deutsche Mythologie, reconstructed a continental Germanic equivalent from German Easter vocabulary and called her Ostara. That reconstruction — not an attested festival — is where the modern name comes from. It entered pagan practice in the twentieth century, when the eight-sabbat Wheel of the Year was assembled.

So: the equinox is astronomical fact, observed for millennia. Eostre is attested once, in the 8th century, for April. Ostara is a 19th-century scholarly reconstruction adopted as a festival name in the 20th. All three are worth knowing separately instead of mashed into "the ancient festival of Ostara."

Ostara and Ishtar: the claim that will not die

Every spring a graphic circulates claiming Easter is named after the Babylonian goddess Ishtar. It is false, and it has a traceable origin: Alexander Hislop's The Two Babylons (1853), a polemic whose etymologies were rejected by scholars long ago.

Ishtar is Akkadian. Eostre is Germanic. The names are not related — they sound similar in modern English and in no other language. German calls Easter Ostern; most of Europe uses a word descended from Pascha, from Hebrew Pesach. If the Ishtar derivation were real, it would have to have skipped every language but two.

The hare is a similar case. Bede says nothing about hares. The Eostre-and-hare connection was proposed by Adolf Holtzmann in the 19th century and had spread through popular writing by 1900 — at which point it was under twenty years old and already being described as ancient. Hares and eggs at spring are genuinely widespread European custom; attaching them to a specific goddess on specific evidence is where it falls apart.

Temple Tip

You lose nothing by dropping the false history. Eggs, hares, spring cleaning and sown seeds are real, widespread, documented folk practice — they just are not evidence of a goddess cult. A practice that says "this is what people have done in spring for a very long time" is both truer and easier to defend than one that says "this is the ancient rite of Ostara." The customs survive the correction intact.

The equinox is the moment the Sun enters Aries

This is not a correspondence someone assigned — it is a definition. Zero degrees of Aries is the March equinox point in tropical astrology. The Sun entering Aries and the equinox occurring are the same event described twice.

That makes Aries the only sign with an exact astronomical anchor to a sabbat, and it is why the Aries qualities — initiative, raw beginning, the first push of growth — sit so naturally on this date. The year's astrological cycle starts here.

One footnote for accuracy: because of precession, the constellation behind the Sun on that day is now Pisces, not Aries. Tropical astrology measures from the equinox itself, so the two systems have drifted apart by about a sign over two thousand years. Neither is wrong; they are measuring different things.

Spring equinox rituals: a simple one that holds up

Twenty minutes, one candle, a handful of seeds, a bowl of water. No special tools.

  1. 1 · Clear one surface completely.
Not the whole house. One table, emptied. Spring cleaning as ritual works because it is the one spring custom with no disputed history at all.
  2. 2 · Open a window at the equinox hour.
4:24 pm Eastern, 1:24 pm Pacific on March 20, 2027. Standing in a specific minute is most of what makes a date feel real.
  3. 3 · Name one thing you are starting.
Out loud, in plain words, and only one. Aries energy is a single hard push, not a list of twelve intentions.
  4. 4 · Plant the seeds.
Any seeds, any pot, indoors is fine. Sowing is the one gesture that forces you to come back and tend it, which is the actual point.
  5. 5 · Light the candle and leave it.
Let it burn safely while you do something ordinary nearby. Rituals you sit and stare at tend not to get repeated.
  6. 6 · Write the date you will check back.
Beltane, six weeks later, is the traditional next hinge. By then the seeds will have told you something.
Six steps. The seeds and the check-back date are what separate this from a one-evening gesture.

Ostara altar: items, colours and offerings

The historically grounded materials are seasonal and local: the first flowers where you live, eggs, seeds, young greens, and water. The crystal and colour correspondences are modern, which is fine as long as nobody pretends otherwise.

Yellow
Daffodils, forsythia, the returning sun.
Green
First shoots, sown seed, sap rising.
Pale pink
Cherry and blackthorn blossom.
White
Eggshell, snowdrop, the cleared surface.
Each colour is labelled in text as well as shown, so the grid is readable without colour vision.

For an altar: a cleared surface, something growing in soil, eggs if you want them, a bowl of water, and one candle in yellow, green or white. Our candle colour guide covers the wider system, and cleansing what you already own is a better equinox gesture than buying more.

Spring equinox vs Ostara vs Easter: what is the difference?

Three things that share a season and get confused constantly.
Spring equinox Ostara Easter
What it is Astronomical event Modern pagan sabbat Christian feast
Date Mar 19–20, fixed by the Sun The equinox Moveable; first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the equinox
Age Permanent Name reconstructed 1835, festival 20th c. Dating fixed 4th c.
Link between them Easter's date is calculated from the equinox, which is the one firm connection. The English word "Easter" comes from Bede's month-name Eosturmonath — the shared root is linguistic, not a borrowed festival.

Spring equinox in the Southern Hemisphere

South of the equator, March 20 is the autumn equinox. The usual practice is to shift the wheel six months, so the spring equinox and Ostara are kept around 22–23 September, when spring actually arrives there.

The one thing worth flagging: the equilux correction above flips too. In the Southern Hemisphere the true equal-day-night falls a few days after the September equinox rather than before it, because the light is going the other way.

Can you really balance an egg on the equinox?

You can — and you can do it on any other day of the year too.

The egg-balancing story claims a special equinox gravitational alignment lets eggs stand on end. There is no such alignment; the Sun's position has no measurable effect on an egg on your counter. What does matter is the egg: ones with small bumps on the shell base balance fairly easily with patience, on any date. The trick became attached to the equinox through a widely repeated 1945 magazine story about the Chinese spring festival, and it has been passed along ever since.

It is still a nice thing to do with children at the equinox. Just frame it as "look how patient hands can balance this" rather than as proof of anything astronomical.

What should I plant at the spring equinox?

Gardening advice keyed to a single calendar date is close to useless across a country that spans zones 3 to 11. The equinox is a prompt, not a planting date.

What travels everywhere: start seeds indoors. Peas, spinach, lettuce, radish and sweet peas tolerate cold soil and can often go outside around the equinox in milder zones. Tomatoes, peppers and basil want indoor starting now and transplanting after your last frost, which in parts of the north is still eight weeks off. Check your own last-frost date rather than any date in an article, including this one.

Ritually, the seed matters more than the species. Something you have to water again tomorrow is the point.

How will you mark the equinox?

Pick the one you would still do if nobody saw it.

What people actually report

We do not publish invented testimonials, so instead: the patterns that recur in public discussion of this date.

The dominant one is disappointment with the weather. People plan a spring-opening ritual and the equinox arrives with snow on the ground, which reads as the festival failing. The useful reframe is that the equinox marks a measurable change in light, not in temperature — the warmth lags the light by weeks everywhere. Second is the history question: a steady stream of people discovering the Ishtar claim is false and asking whether that invalidates their practice. It does not. Third is intention overload — long written lists made at the equinox and forgotten by April, which is the specific failure the one-thing-only rule above is meant to prevent.

What we don't promise

Nothing on this page is a remedy, a treatment, or financial or medical advice. Marking the equinox will not bring you luck, money, fertility or a particular outcome, and we are not claiming the seasonal correspondences here have any effect beyond the attention you bring to them.

We also do not claim Ostara is an ancient festival. The equinox is astronomy. Eostre is one sentence in Bede. Ostara is Grimm's 1835 reconstruction, adopted as a sabbat name in the twentieth century alongside the rest of the eight-festival wheel. A practice can be meaningful and recent at the same time, and saying so costs nothing.

Practically: how to work with this

Put March 20, 2027, 4:24 pm Eastern in your calendar now, with an alarm. For 2028 set it on March 19, because in US time zones that is the day it happens.

Then do less than you are planning. Clear one surface, sow one pot, name one thing, light one flame. Check back at Beltane six weeks later. If you want the wider cycle, our guide to the eight sabbats places the equinox in context and the 2027 sabbat dates are all in one place. The refillable oil candles are there if you want one vessel you relight each year.

Frequently asked questions

When is the spring equinox 2027?

Saturday, March 20, 2027 at 20:24 UTC — 4:24 pm Eastern, 3:24 pm Central, 2:24 pm Mountain, 1:24 pm Pacific. In 2028 the equinox falls on March 19 in all US time zones, even though many calendars will print March 20.

Is day and night really equal on the equinox?

No. Daylight is measured from the upper edge of the Sun, and the atmosphere refracts light over the horizon, so daylight runs about eight minutes longer than night on the equinox across the US. The genuinely equal day, the equilux, falls a few days earlier — March 17 in New York, March 15 in Miami.

What is the difference between Ostara and the spring equinox?

The spring equinox is the astronomical event. Ostara is the name modern pagans give the festival held at that moment. The equinox is permanent and measurable; the name Ostara comes from Jacob Grimm's 1835 reconstruction and entered pagan practice in the twentieth century.

Is Easter named after Ishtar?

No. That claim comes from Alexander Hislop's The Two Babylons (1853) and has no linguistic basis. Ishtar is Akkadian; the English word Easter derives from Eosturmonath, the Old English month-name Bede records. Most European languages call the feast something descended from Pesach instead.

Can you balance an egg on the spring equinox?

Yes, but there is nothing special about the date. Eggs with slightly bumpy shells can be balanced on any day with patience. The Sun's position has no measurable effect on an egg standing on a table.

What zodiac sign starts at the spring equinox?

Aries. In tropical astrology, zero degrees of Aries is defined as the March equinox point, so the Sun entering Aries and the equinox occurring are the same event. Because of precession the constellation behind the Sun that day is now Pisces — the two systems measure different things.

What do you do on Ostara?

The common practices are spring cleaning, sowing seeds, decorating eggs, bringing in the first flowers, and marking the equinox moment itself. Clearing one surface and planting something are the two that need no belief and no equipment.

When is Ostara in the Southern Hemisphere?

Around 22–23 September, when spring actually begins there. March 20 is the autumn equinox south of the equator, so most practitioners shift the whole Wheel of the Year by six months.
