A gong does not play notes. It plays weather. Strike it once and the sound keeps arriving in waves for half a minute, each one slightly different from the last — which is why a single gong can hold a room longer than an entire set of bowls.
This is Meinl Sonic Energy's 22" Moon Phases soundscape gong: nickel silver, handcrafted in Germany, its polished face carrying the cycle of the moon. Soundscape gongs are built for depth and evolution rather than a single clean crash, and this one keeps unfolding long after you expect it to stop.

How to use it
Hang it, do not hold it. A gong needs to swing freely to open up — a stand with closed sides lets the disc move without damping. Our Round Gong Stand takes gongs up to 32 inches and is the natural partner for this one.
Warm it first. Before the session begins, brush the face gently with the mallet in slow circles until you can just hear it breathing. A cold gong struck hard sounds harsh; a warmed gong struck softly sounds enormous.
Then strike off-centre, never dead centre, with a large soft mallet. Wait. The peak of a gong's sound arrives seconds after the strike, and the most common mistake is hitting it again before it has finished arriving.
To stop it, damp with a flat palm on the face — slowly, from the edge inwards.
Gong or singing bowl
| 22" Soundscape Gong | Crystal singing bowl | |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Wide, evolving, weather-like | Focused, pure, sustained |
| Best moment | The peak or the close of a session | Opening, layering, holding a tone |
| Setup | Needs a stand and clear space | Sits on a cushion or ring |
| Room size | Medium to large | Any |
✨ Temple Tip
Warm the gong for a full minute before anyone in the room realises the session has started. By the time you make the first real strike, the instrument is already open and the room has already gone quiet. Nobody can tell you how it happened.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a stand?
Effectively, yes. A gong has to swing freely to sound properly, and holding a 22-inch disc by hand damps it and risks the edge. Our Round Gong Stand fits gongs up to 32 inches.
What mallet should I use?
A large soft gong mallet for full strikes and a smaller friction mallet for rubbing and shimmer effects. Hard mallets are for orchestral crashes, not for sound work.
Is 22 inches too big for a home practice?
It is a substantial instrument and it wants clear space around it, but plenty of people keep one in a home practice room. If your space is tight, a bowl or steel tongue drum will serve you better.
What is a soundscape gong?
It is a gong built for evolving, textural sound rather than a single sharp crash — the tone develops and shifts as it decays. That makes it particularly suited to sound baths and long-form listening.
How do I clean it?
A dry, soft cloth only. Avoid touching the polished face with bare fingers where you can — fingerprints mark nickel silver and are difficult to remove without abrasives that would damage the finish.
