Choosing a necklace you will actually wear

A necklace is the piece of spiritual jewelry people abandon fastest, and almost always for a mechanical reason rather than a spiritual one: the chain sits at the wrong length, the pendant is heavier than it looked in the photograph, or the clasp is fiddly enough that putting it on becomes a decision. Solve those three things and the meaning takes care of itself.

Length decides everything

Chokers sit at 14 to 16 inches, right at the base of the throat. They are a deliberate styling choice — they show, and they do not sit well under a collar. Princess length, 17 to 19 inches, falls at the collarbone and is the default for a single crystal pendant. Matinee, 20 to 24 inches, drops to the sternum and is what you want if the pendant is large or if you plan to wear it over a sweater. Malas run roughly 30 to 40 inches, long enough to loop twice or to hang past the heart. If the necklace is meant for daily wear under clothing, measure something you already like rather than guessing.

What the 108 beads are for

A traditional mala carries 108 counting beads plus one larger guru bead with a tassel, and it is a tally device before it is anything else: bead, mantra, next bead, until your fingers reach the guru bead and the round is done. That mechanism is why hand-knotted construction is worth the price difference. A knot between each bead keeps the spacing even under the thumb, stops the beads sliding into a clump, and means a broken cord costs you one bead instead of all of them.

Stone, metal and setting

Raw wire-wrapped points show the crystal’s natural termination, so no two pieces are identical; polished and faceted settings look more finished but hide the character of the stone. In metal, gold-plated brass and 18k gold finish over sterling both read warm, and both wear through eventually at the clasp and at the back of the chain — that is normal for plating, not a fault. Oxidized sterling silver is dark by design and can be brought back with a polishing cloth. Softer, porous stones such as selenite, malachite and pyrite should stay away from water, sweat and perfume; quartz, onyx, tiger eye and agate are far more tolerant.

How to judge quality before you buy

Look for a stated chain length and a stated pendant size, a named metal rather than just “gold”, and a clasp you can name — lobster, toggle, spring ring. On a mala, look for the words hand-knotted. Listings that only ever show a piece lying flat on a surface, and never on a neck, often mean the drape is unflattering. A stone described with an origin and a hardness is a better sign than a stone described only with adjectives.

Wearing more than one

Layering works when the lengths differ by at least two inches; closer than that and the chains fight each other all day. Put the shortest and lightest piece nearest the throat and the heaviest at the bottom, and keep the number of focal stones to one. Storing each necklace clasped and hung, rather than loose in a bowl, is the single change that prevents most tangles.

What is the difference between a mala and a regular beaded necklace?

Can I shower, swim or sleep in a crystal necklace?

Better not. Water and sweat damage softer, porous stones such as selenite, malachite and pyrite, weaken glued settings and speed up tarnish on plated metal, and sleeping in a chain stresses the clasp and any wire wrap. Quartz, onyx, tiger eye and agate are more forgiving, but taking a piece off for showering, sport and sleep roughly doubles its life.

Do crystal necklaces need to be cleansed?

Many practitioners cleanse a daily piece regularly. The methods that are safe for almost every stone and setting are moonlight overnight, resting the piece on a selenite plate, or passing it through incense smoke. Avoid water and salt unless you know your stone and your metal tolerate them. This is a traditional practice, not a tested one.
