Collection: Oil Candles

How to choose an oil candle

An oil candle is a refillable vessel, not a consumable. A cotton wick sits in a holder above a reservoir of liquid bio fuel, draws the fuel upward and burns it with a steady flame; when the reservoir empties you refill it, and the glass, the botanicals set into it and the design stay on your altar for years. All twenty-six candles here are made by Logos Candles and all work this way, which makes the choice unlike choosing a wax candle: you are picking an object to keep, not one to use up. If you have never worked with a candle at all, candle magic for beginners covers what the practice needs before any purchase, and crystal candles versus deity candles explains where a scented lamp sits among the other formats in the shop.

Size is the only real decision after the design

Every design comes in the same three sizes at the same three prices — $25.95 for the 3 oz, $37.95 for the 6 oz and $63.95 for the 12 oz — with a stated burn per fill of roughly 10–12, 18–22 and 35–40 hours. Divided out, the first fill works out at roughly $2.36, $1.90 and $1.71 per burning hour, so the largest is the cheapest per hour. But that arithmetic only describes the first fill; afterwards you are paying for fuel alone, so the practical question is not value per hour but how long a single uninterrupted burn needs to be. A short daily lighting is well served by the 3 oz, which is also the size to try a scent on. A weekly practice sits comfortably on the 6 oz. A vigil you would rather not break in the middle wants the 12 oz. One supplier quirk is worth knowing: for the Aries candle Logos gives a single combined figure of roughly 18 to 45 hours across the three sizes rather than the per-size breakdown the rest of the range carries; the product page says so.

The three design families — every candle on this page

Twelve zodiac signs. One candle per sign, each with its own fragrance: Aries (Blood Orange & Cinnamon), Taurus (White Peach Blossom), Gemini (White Sage & Lavender), Cancer (Sea Salt and Orchid), Leo (Peach & Amber), Virgo (Water Lily), Libra (Rose Garden), Scorpio (Cinnamon Apple), Sagittarius (Azure Coast), Capricorn (Frosted Juniper), Aquarius (Peppermint and Eucalyptus) and Pisces (Ocean Breeze). Most people buy their Sun sign; the second most useful choice is the Moon sign, which moon sign meaning explained sets out, and a candle for the sign a season is passing through — see Libra season 2026 and Scorpio season 2026 — is the third. If you would rather have a fragrance-free beeswax figure of the same sign to dress and use up, both formats sit side by side in Zodiac Candles.

Eleven planets and luminaries. The Sun (Solar Petals & Tangerine), The Moon (Eucalyptus and Lavender), Mercury (Jasmine & Green Apple), Venus (Rose and Lavender), Mars (Nectarine White Ginger Burst), Jupiter (Birds of Paradise), Saturn (Volcano Blue), Uranus (Peppermint and Eucalyptus), Neptune (Lavender and Ocean Breeze) and Pluto (Witches Brew) — plus a second sun. Helios (Orange) is the Greek god who drives the sun across the sky rather than the luminary itself, and Logos built it as a morning candle, the one lit with the first coffee; The Sun is the broader vitality-and-clarity piece. If you buy one candle only and work astrologically, a planetary candle stretches further than a sign candle: Venus serves any Venus working, while Leo is fixed to Leo. The classical seven also map onto the days of the week, which planetary incense by day of the week lays out and which works just as well for lamps. For the planets people most often buy in a difficult transit, Saturn return explained, what Mercury retrograde actually means and Venus retrograde 2026 are the reading. These candles sit with their matching planetary incense in Planetary Magic.

Three named deities. Hekate (Black Amber Fig) for thresholds, protection and the dark stretch of a cycle — Hekate's Deipnon explains the monthly offering she is traditionally given at the dark moon; Lilith (Black Lavender) for power reclaimed and shadow met without apology, with Black Moon Lilith in your chart as the astrological companion; and Aphrodite (Love Spell) for attraction in the wide sense, a shared table or an evening entirely to yourself. Before Aphrodite goes into love work aimed at a particular person, love spells and consent is the honest reading, and using a devotional object from a tradition you were not raised in is worth ten minutes for all three. The rest of the shop's named figures, in other formats, are in Gods & Goddesses.

Read the scent line before the symbol

Each design carries a fragrance chosen to match the theme rather than picked from a generic range, so the scent is part of the decision and not decoration. Two things follow. First, several candles smell alike: Aquarius and Uranus share Peppermint and Eucalyptus outright, and five more — Gemini, Venus, Neptune, The Moon and Lilith — are built on lavender. If you want two candles that read differently in the same room, pick from different families of scent, not just different symbols. Second, on eleven product pages the supplier's spec sheet names a different fragrance from the one its own description and photography show; in every case the product page says which we list and why, so read that line before you order rather than after. If fragrance is the problem rather than the choice, the twelve signs also exist as fragrance-free beeswax figures in Beeswax Spell Candles.

If one is not enough

Because every candle here costs the same, the only way to save is the set. Oil Candle Trios sells three of these lamps as one piece — the four zodiac element trios and six deity trios — for an altar that wants a triad rather than a single flame. The vessel is its own holder, so nothing on Candle Holders is needed; what it does need is a level, heatproof surface. Every candle named on this page is in stock as it was last checked; anything that goes out of stock will be named here rather than dropped.

Living with an oil candle

The wick is cotton and self-sustaining — it draws fuel rather than burning away with it, so there is no trimming, no tunnelling and nothing left in the bottom. What it does need is to stay wet. Fill to just below the shoulder, let the wick soak for a few minutes before the first lighting, keep the botanicals under the oil line, and refill before the level runs out rather than after: a wick that burns down into an empty vessel chars, and a charred wick is what you go on smelling long after the flame is out. That, not the fuel, is the usual reason an oil lamp starts to soot — why a candle burns black covers the wax-candle version of the same fault. Snuff rather than blow out, let the vessel cool completely before moving or refilling it, keep it clear of drafts and anything that overhangs, and never leave it burning unattended or while you sleep; a fuel reservoir is not a tealight. Timing questions — which day, which moon — are answered in best time for a spell, and candle flame meanings answers what people ask mid-burn. These candles are traditionally used for ritual focus, seasonal work and atmosphere; any effect beyond that is not scientifically established, and nothing here replaces medical, legal or financial advice.
